It’s been nearly two months since the Bruins last recorded a road win, and online sportsbooks don’t expect that trend to be broken anytime soon. They’ve pegged Washington as home favorites over Boston on Saturday afternoon in the NHL odds, in a game with a total that I’m convinced is too high.

Puck drop is set for 3 pm ET from Capital One Arena, in Washington, DC, with ABC providing broadcast duties.

I’m taking under 6.5 goals for my Bruins vs Capitals prediction, despite Washington being one of the top-six scoring teams in the league. The Capitals’ offense has been stuck in neutral over the last three weeks, and I don’t expect that to change against the stingy B’s.

The Caps have scored two or fewer times in five of their last six games, and have exceeded three goals in just one of eight contests since the Olympic break. During that stretch, they rank bottom-12 in goals for, generating the eighth fewest scoring chances and the ninth fewest shots.

Washington mustered only 22 shots in a 3-1 loss to the Bruins in Boston last week, with just 15 of those attempts coming during 5-on-5 play. Leading scorer Alex Ovechkin has only two goals since January 27th, while third leading scorer Tom Wilson has lit the lamp just twice since New Year’s Day.

The Caps enter play five points back of Boston for the East’s final Wild Card spot, but the Bruins do have two games in hand. Boston is seeking its first road victory since January 17th, and have alternated wins and losses each time out since the Olympic break.

They remain an extreme longshot in the Stanley Cup odds, and despite boasting a lineup led by 78-point man David Pastranak and 34-goal scorer Morgan Geekie, this is not a team known for its offense.

BOS vs WSH: Advanced Stats 5-on-5

The Bruins rank 26th in expected goals for this season, and bottom-10 in scoring chances. Defense and goaltending are the team’s bread and butter, with only six teams having allowed fewer goals entering the weekend.

One of those teams just happens to be the Capitals, and with a battle between Olympic goaltenders on deck, this game will be hard-pressed to reach 6 goals, let alone 7. Give me the under.

Bruins vs Capitals Picks

• Elias Lindholm 1+ Points (-120 at Bet365)

Despite this matchup projecting as a low-scoring affair for me, I do see value on Elias Lindholm to get on the scoresheet. He’s gone pointless in three straight games, which has brought his odds down, but it hasn’t been for a lack of opportunity.

Lindholm has averaged over 20 minutes of ice time during his last four games. He’s also one of the team’s premier power-play producers, with 19 points tallied already this year with the man advantage. That last stat is key because Washington owns a mediocre PK unit, and are one of the 12 most penalized teams.

Moving on to the Bruins vs Capitals lineups, where both teams enter in good health. As for the battle between the pipes, it’s expected to be Jeremy Swayman vs Logan Thompson, with both goalies having performed well this season versus the opposing team.

Swayman is 2-0 against the Caps, with a 1.00 GAA and .966 save percentage. Thompson, meanwhile, sports a 2.06 GAA versus Boston, and a .920 save percentage.
