The puck drops Wednesday in a battle between two squads that would need an incredible run just to make the postseason, with the Caps and Philly well off the pace.
Washington (32-26-7, 34-31 ATS, 71 pts) squares off against Philadelphia (29-23-11, 38-25 ATS, 69 pts), in a duel between Metro Division foes. The Capitals are seven points out of a playoff spot, while their counterparts are nine behind.
Action is set to get underway at 7:30 pm ET / 4:30 pm PT from Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with TNT/HBO Max/truTV providing the coverage in the United States.
Capitals vs Flyers Prediction
- Under 5.5 Goals (+112 at FanDuel)

My Capitals vs Flyers prediction has this being a low-scoring affair, and I’m taking a slight risk by selecting under 5.5 markers. In four of the Caps’ last six skirmishes, five or fewer goals have been accumulated. In six of Philly’s last eight contests, under 5.5 goals have been combined as well. Going with the under reveals a wager that’s paying out plus money, which is intriguing.
Per the NHL odds, it’s extremely close between the Capitals vs Flyers with our SBD formula predicting a 3.46-3.18 WSH tally, which flies in the face of my prediction unfortunately. It’s a small sample size, but in two of the last three battles between these two foes, four or five combined goals have been tallied.
The goaltending matchup will feature Logan Thompson (WSH) against Samuel Ersson (PHI). The former has a 2.23 GAA and .914 save % in five outings since the Olympic break, with the Caps failing to score more than three goals in the first five games back, until their latest vs Calgary (7).
The latter surrendered just two markers against the Rangers in his only start since the break, stopping 22 shots for a .917 save %.
WSH vs PHI Season Stats/Ranks
It should come as no surprise that two clubs well out of the playoff chase don’t possess outstanding statistics. The Capitals are a squad that’s better than Philly in goals for and against, and are stronger on special teams. However, both units are really poor on the power play, which obviously is hindering them.
The Caps’ netminding has been quite solid, led by Canadian Olympian Logan Thompson. The Flyers’ annual struggles to keep the puck out of their net have persisted, though they’re just below league average in that regard.
Capitals vs Flyers Props Pick
- Jakob Chychrun Anytime Goal Scorer (+310 at FanDuel)

For a prop bet, I can’t ignore the blueliner that leads all NHL defensemen in goals, and that’s the Capitals’ Jakob Chychrun. He’s sniped 22 times on the campaign, which is a career-high. For anytime goal scorer wagers, it’s more fun adding some juice to their odds to sweat over.
There are nine players with shorter odds than him to light the lamp, so you’re getting Chychrun at tremendous value. If you want to parlay under 5.5 combined goals, yet Chychrun to find the back of the net, that total pays out a cool +850 at FanDuel.
Capitals vs Flyers Odds
The Capitals are -132 moneyline favorites and are laying 1.5 goals on the puck line at +176. The Flyers come back as a +110 underdog, while the total currently sits at 5.5 goals at FanDuel.
The implied win probability of WSH at -132 is 56.9%. You’d need to wager $132 on the favorites to win $100, while a $100 bet on the underdogs clears $110.
