The puck drops Wednesday night in an intraconference battle between the two teams ranked in the top 10 of the Stanley Cup Odds: the New Jersey Devils and Vegas Golden Knights.

New Jersey (18-14-1, 12-21 ATS) squares off against Vegas (16-6-9, 8-23 ATS), with the Devils one point outside of a playoff spot and the Knights second in the Pacific Division.

Action is set to get underway at 10:00 pm ET / 7 pm PT from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, with TNT/HBO Max/truTV providing the coverage in the United States.

• Under 5.5 Total Goals (-110 at Fanatics)

My Devils vs Golden Knights prediction is that under 5.5 total goals will be scored. I can’t in good conscience pick either team to cover the spread, because they both have been wretched at that this season (NJ 12-21, VGK 8-23).

In the last four meetings between these two squads, under 5.5 goals has been the play, with New Jersey scoring just twice in those games, as Vegas has shut them out in back-to-back affairs, including less than two weeks ago.

Per the NHL odds, our SBD formula has the favored Knights taking this one 3.55-3.17, which points to over 5.5 goals being scored between the Devils vs Golden Knights, despite that going completely against my selection.

Why I’m also bullish to go against our SBD model is the fact that five of the last seven NJ duels and four of the last five contests for VGK have seen five or fewer goals notched this season.

Starting goalies haven’t been named, but it’s expected to be Jacob Markstrom versus Carter Hart, given that both these teams have had multiple days off. If those teams don’t go with the presumed starters, they might be better off, with Jake Allen stronger than Markstrom by a considerable margin this season, and former Devil Akira Schmid shutting out NJ earlier this month.

New Jersey hasn’t been lighting the world on fire offensively, as they deal with injuries to key players like Jack Hughes, and their penalty kill leaves a lot to be desired.

Vegas is in the top half of four main categories, with a particular emphasis on their special teams units that are both in the top ten for power play and penalty kill.

• Ivan Barbashev Anytime Goal Scorer (+350 at DraftKings)

For a prop bet, I’m going with Knights forward Ivan Barbashev to light the lamp. He has eleven markers on the campaign, two shy of matching the team-high held by Tomas Hertl and Pavel Dorofeyev. Both those players are +210 to snipe, so at +350, you’re getting better value with Barbashev.

He’s scored in three of his last six outings, including against New Jersey in a 3-0 Vegas victory on December 5th. If you want to get spicy and parlay under 5.5 total goals, plus Barbashev to snipe, that total pays out a cool +950.
