It’s East meets West tonight as the New Jersey Devils (25-22-2, 13-13-0 away) visit the Edmonton Oilers (25-17-8, 12-6-4 home). Edmonton’s offense has been on fire lately, and online sportsbooks expect Connor McDavid and Co. to knock off New Jersey per the latest NHL odds.
Puck drop is set for 7:00 pm PT / 10:00 pm ET from Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta.
Here are my Devils vs Oilers prediction and picks, along with how to watch Tuesday Night Hockey.
Devils vs Oilers Prediction & Pick
I’m expecting a high-scoring affair tonight, as the Oilers look to continue their impressive play. Edmonton has won back-to-back games outscoring their opponents 11-0, while New Jersey has had a hard time keeping the puck out of their own net.
The Devils were on the ice last night, skating to an OT win over Calgary, and I expect tired legs will lead to even more Oiler chances.
New Jersey enters play ranked bottom-10 in both goals against and expected goals against, and have significantly underperformed this season. Veteran Jake Allen will likely get the start on the second half of a back-to-back, and he’s yielded at least four goals in three of his last five starts.
Jake Allen vs Tristan Jarry Stats
Allen’s been especially bad against high danger chances, a metric that Edmonton ranks 9th in, grading out 39th out of 42 goalies versus opportunities in close since Christmas.
That spells trouble versus McDavid, who’s on an absolute heater. The Hart Trophy odds contender has 43 points in his last 29 games, and has ignited the Oilers top ranked powerplay.
Edmonton has clicked on 35% of their opportunities with the man advantage over the last 20 games, and the penalty kill has been a major New Jersey struggle. They rank bottom-10 in that stat, surrendering a goal on 23% of their shorthanded situations.
NJ vs EDM: 5-vs-5 Advanced Stats
Also working in favor of the Oilers attack, is the stellar recent play of Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The duo has combined for 7 points over their last two games, making up for the missing Leon Draisaitl. The sniper is off on a leave of absence for a family illness.
At the other end of the rink, I’m leaving the light on for the Devils offense. New Jersey has been one of the unluckiest teams offensively this season, falling 27 goals short of their expected goal total.
Star forward Jack Hughes has lit the lamp just 11 times, but positive regression is coming. Hughes hasn’t scored in 13 games, but did produce seven shots, including six from in tight last night. He’s a career 11% shooter over seven seasons, but his year his shooting percentage is nearly 2% lower. Hughes is too skilled for that to continue, which makes him an intriguing goal scoring bet at +180 tonight.
Tristan Jarry is expected to start for Edmonton, and there’s been cracks in his armor lately. Jarry has surrendered four goals in two of his past four outings, while the Oilers rank bottom-four in scoring chances allowed. Give me over 6 goals tonight.
Devils vs Kings Odds
The best place to bet over 6 goals at the time of writing is BetMGM, who are offering the line at -120 odds. Most books have moved the total to 6.5, and I wouldn’t hate betting the over on that line if you can get plus money odds.
Edmonton is currently listed as a -170 moneyline favorite, with the Devils coming back as +150 underdogs.
