The New Jersey Devils (34-31-2) cross the Hudson to face the New York Rangers (28-31-8) Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden. New Jersey is 6-2 in its last eight and fighting to stay in the Wild Card conversation. New York had won 15 straight before Monday’s 4-1 loss to Los Angeles.

The last time these two met, on March 7, Jack Hughes had a hat trick and four points in a 6-3 Devils win. He also recently became the fastest player in franchise history to reach 400 career points.

• Devils ML (-120 at Fanatics)

New Jersey is 6-2 over its last eight games and 4-1 in the last five head-to-head meetings with the Rangers. My Devils vs Rangers prediction is on the New Jersey moneyline.

The Rangers had a great run, but that 15-game point streak was built largely on Shesterkin’s back. He played Monday’s loss to LA and is likely getting the night off, meaning the Rangers are turning to Jonathan Quick, who is 2-14-2 in his last 18 starts. The Devils won 6-3 at MSG less than two weeks ago and should have the edge again with Quick in net.

The shot generation gap is massive. New Jersey outshots opponents by 2.22 per game (7th in the NHL) while the Rangers are -3.87 (29th). The Devils generate nearly 30 shots per game while the Rangers manage just 25.24. New Jersey’s shooting percentage is the worst in the league (8.79%), which means they’re getting plenty of chances — the goals just haven’t been falling at the rate you’d expect.

The Rangers counter with the sixth-best power play in the NHL (24.6%) and win 54.26% of their faceoffs (3rd). They’re a dangerous team when they get chances, but they don’t generate enough of them at even strength to offset the Devils’ volume.

I’m starting my Devils vs Rangers picks with the guy who torched this Rangers defense for a hat trick 11 days ago.

Hughes has 10 points in his last five games and just became the fastest Devil to reach 400 career points. He put up a hat trick and four points against this same Rangers team on March 7, and his odds to score have shortened from +155 to +135 since the market opened.

With Quick likely in the crease instead of Shesterkin, the 24-year-old should have even more room to work. At +135, I’ll take the plus-money on the most dangerous player in this game finding the net.

Hamilton has cleared 2.5 shots in 12 of his last 15 games, averaging 3.33 per contest in that stretch. The veteran blueliner quarterbacks New Jersey’s top power-play unit and will see plenty of opportunities against a Rangers PK that ranks 21st.

Rounding out my Devils vs. Rangers picks is a play on J.T. Miller to exceed his shots-on-goal prop total.

Miller has exceeded 1.5 shots on goal in 13 of his last 15 home games as an underdog, averaging 2.47 per contest in those spots. He’s slotted onto the second line and the top power-play unit and will be looking to snap a goal drought dating back to late January.

The -198 juice is heavy, but a 87% hit rate in this exact situation makes it a strong parlay piece.

The Devils vs Rangers odds have New Jersey as a slight road favorite at -115, with the Rangers at +104 as home underdogs. The under has hit in four straight meetings and five of the last seven at MSG. But both teams have been scoring recently — the Rangers have put up four or more goals in four of their last five games, and the Devils are averaging 4.0 goals per game over their last eight.

Markstrom vs Quick Stats

Markstrom has been better lately than his season numbers suggest, posting a 2.59 GAA and .902 save percentage over his last 10 starts (6-4-0). He’s been the ninth start in New Jersey’s last 10 games and is a big reason the Devils are still within reach of a playoff spot.

Quick is expected to start after Shesterkin played Monday’s loss to LA. The Rangers are well above .500 when Shesterkin starts (22-13-6) and would likely be in the playoff race if not for a prolonged injury absence earlier this season.

Quick has filled in but is 2-14-2 in his last 18 starts. He did shut out Calgary 4-0 last week with 21 saves, but that was only his second win in that 18-game stretch.
