Oilers Even Series

The Edmonton Oilers evened up the series with the Canucks on Tuesday, winning 3-2 at Rogers Arena thanks to a late Evan Bouchard goal. The big storyline was in the goaltending crease, where Calvin Pickard made his first start of the postseason, turning away 28 shots.

It was impressive that Vancouver almost forced overtime on Tuesday, as they were outshot 30-21 and clearly outplayed. Head coach Rick Tocchet said post-game that about five or six players were “passengers,” which should light a fire under them. JT Miller reportedly apologized to his coach for his performance.

The Canucks were without defenseman Carson Soucy, who was suspended for one game by the NHL Department of Player Safety on Monday for cross-checking Connor McDavid. Soucy is set to make his return on home ice in Game 6 tonight.

When we analyze the series as a whole, the Oilers have been the superior team, controlling 60.79% of the expected goals compared to a 39.21% expected goal share for Vancouver. The Canucks were winning the goalie battle early in the series, but Calvin Pickard matched up well with Artur Silovs in Game 4.

Oilers vs Canucks Player Props

Player props are now available for Oilers vs Canucks Game 5, with Zach Hyman sporting the best odds to score at -120. Hyman leads all NHL players this postseason with nine goals.

Brock Boeser +165 2.5 (-115o/-115u) 0.5 (-166o/+130u)
J.T. Miller +210 2.5 (+100o/-130u) 0.5 (-238o/+180u)

Oilers vs Canucks Prediction

We can expect a much better performance from Vancouver on Thursday considering the commotion Tocchet stirred up with his post-game comments. However, will it be enough to motivate his team to push the Oilers to the brink of elimination?

The Oilers’ big guns continue to thrive, but Vancouver needs more from their top performers. Elias Pettersson, in particular, has managed just two even-strength points this postseason. The Canucks have only capitalized on their power play opportunities in two out of four games, while the Oilers’ power play has scored in all four matchups.

We think the Oilers will build off their performance in Game 4 and the recent goalie change. Pickard came into this series with a very solid .917 career save percentage against Vancouver. Edmonton has been the better team at both even strength and special teams, so we’re taking advantage of their price as small road favorites.

The Oilers have already won once in Vancouver this postseason and are 5-1 in their last six games as a favorite between -110 and -150. Silovs is the key to an upset victory for Vancouver, but even he looked vulnerable in Game 4 with a .900 save percentage against the high-powered Oilers offense.

EDM-VAN Game 5 Pick:

  • Oiles ML (-142 at DraftKings)
