  • The Golden Knights are -125 moneyline home favorites over the Oilers in Game 5 tonight, despite trailing 3-1 in the series
  • Edmonton completely shut down Vegas in Game 4, posting a 3-0 victory and holding the Golden Knights to just 23 shots

The Edmonton Oilers have an opportunity to eliminate the Vegas Golden Knights on the road in Game 5 tonight. Edmonton dominated Game 4, winning 3-0 and completely smothering Vegas’ offense.

Despite their 3-1 series deficit, the Golden Knights are still slight -125 moneyline favorites in the Oilers vs Golden Knights odds. Vegas’ price as home favorites can likely be attributed to their impressive 29-9-3 record at T-Mobile Arena during the regular season and 2-1 mark in their own barn during the first round.

The total is set at 6.5, with the Under returning +105 odds. Goals are expected to be at a premium in this potential elimination game, especially given how well Edmonton has defended of late and Vegas’ struggles to generate offense.

Oilers vs Golden Knights Game 5 Start Time

Puck drop is scheduled for 6:30 pm PT / 9:30 pm ET at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. ESPN will carry the American broadcast, while CBC and SN have the Canadian TV rights.

The Oilers are 7-3 so far this postseason, but just 3-2 on the road. During the regular season, Edmonton went 23-16-2 as visitors. Vegas has a 5-5 playoff record, including 2-1 at home in Round 1.

I’m predicting a tightly-contested defensive battle in this potential series-clincher. Edmonton put on a clinic in Game 4, limiting Vegas to just 23 shots and almost no high-danger chances in a 3-0 shutout victory. The Oilers have now outscored the Golden Knights 12-7 in the series.

The advanced metrics heavily favor Edmonton, who boasts a 60.2% expected goals share and 55.2% Corsi For percentage over their past eight contests. They’ve completely controlled play at 5-on-5 and gotten back to their structured defensive style.

Leon Draisaitl’s line, in particular, has done a masterful job shutting down Vegas’ top weapons like Jack Eichel. When the Oilers’ stars are playing a strong two-way game, this team is extremely difficult to beat.

Goaltending has been a bit of an adventure for both teams, but Stuart Skinner is heating up at the right time for Edmonton. After posting a 23-save shutout in Game 4, the 26-year-old is now 4-1 in potential series-clinching starts with a 2.41 GAA and .912 save percentage. He’s unflappable under pressure.

While Adin Hill’s overall numbers don’t look great, it’s worth noting that the Golden Knights allowed the third-fewest goals at home (2.41 per game) during the regular season. Hill posted a solid .910 save percentage at T-Mobile Arena prior to the playoffs. I expect a bounce-back performance from him tonight.

Vegas’ offense has gone cold, with just four total goals over the last two games. Their power play is 0-for-5 during that span, as Edmonton has taken away their time and space. In an elimination game, I don’t see the Golden Knights taking many risks early on, which could lend itself to a low-scoring start.

The Under has been a strong trend for both teams – it’s 33-22 in the Oilers’ last 55 road games and 40-28 in the Golden Knights’ last 68 overall. With the intensity ramped up and the stakes at their highest, I’m expecting goals to be at a premium tonight. Take the Under 6.5 at generous plus-money odds.

Edmonton enters Game 5 as +105 moneyline underdogs, with Vegas favored at -125 despite facing elimination. The Oilers are hefty -230 favorites to cover the +1.5 puck line, while the Golden Knights are +190 to win by 2+ goals. If Edmonton is able to finish off the series tonight, it will be a tight game.

The total of 6.5 suggests a bit of a higher-scoring contest, but the Under offers great +105 value. Goals should be hard to come by with the Oilers clamping down defensively and the Golden Knights struggling to find the back of the net. Neither team is likely to run up the score in this pivotal matchup.
