The Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs are two teams going in different directions, but there’s always intrigue in this Eastern Conference battle. The Carolina Hurricanes (43-19-5, 18-10-4 away) visit the Toronto Maple Leafs (29-28-12, 17-12-7 home) at 7:00 PM ET. The Leafs have lost three of their last four games at Scotiabank Arena.
The Leafs are dead last in the Atlantic Division. They’ll be without their captain, Auston Matthews, who had knee surgery earlier this week. The Hurricanes are first in the Metropolitan Division and are gearing up for what they hope is a long playoff run. Carolina has collected 92 points this season.

Hurricanes vs Leafs Prediction
- Carolina Hurricanes to win in regulation (-130 at DraftKings)
The Hurricanes are loaded with talent, and they’re taking on a Toronto Maple Leafs team that has no real motivation to win right now. Brandon Bussi gets the start for Carolina, and he has been UNREAL this season. He has a record of 25-6-1 with a goals against average of 2.47. Bussi is responsible for two shutouts this year and won his one career start against the Leafs.
Toronto was a seller at the trade deadline, and it will be a miserable finish to the year for the Leafs. It won’t get any easier for them as they face one of the best teams in the NHL. The team at the center of the hockey universe is 2-5-3 in its last ten games and has given up at least three goals in its last four losses. 16 of their 27 defeats have come in regulation this year.
- Matthew Knies to record a point (-165 at BetMGM)
Matthew Knies has had a down year, but he’ll need to step up with the absence of Auston Matthews. He is producing as of late, recording six points (2 goals, 4 assists) in his last four contests. The American winger gets a ton of time on the first power-play unit, recording four goals and eight assists with the man advantage. Knies has lit the lamp once and dished out four assists in eight career games against the Hurricanes.
Knies has recorded at least two shots on goal in as many games and averages around 18:52 of ice time per game. The total for this duel is set at 6.5 (+105), so there could be a lot of goals scored between these two Eastern Conference teams.
