Edmonton’s six-goal outburst in Game 2 was the club’s most impressive offensive showing in a playoff game in six years. The Oilers whipped the Anaheim Ducks 7-1 at home in Game 6 of their 2016 second-round series. Interestingly, though, they went to the Honda Center – not all that far from LA – and lost Game 7 by a 2-1 count.
In Game 1, Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft shortened his bench. He gave five forwards over 20 minutes of ice time and leaned heavily on his top-two defense pairings. Woodcroft balanced the ice time of his players more evenly in Game 2, with Edmonton relying on depth to wear down the Kings.

Eight Kings players made their Stanley cup debuts in Game 1 of this series. That adrenlaine rush used up, the reality of how difficult the playoffs are seemed to hit them hard in Game 2. While Edmonton went 2-for-4 on the power play, LA was 0-for-4 and surrendered a shorthanded goal to Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse to fall behind 2-0.
LA held a 12-6 shot advantage in the scoreless opening frame of Game 2. The Kings rely on playing a tight-checking style and keeping the game close. Edmonton will want to again raise the tempo in Game 3 and force LA to open up the pace of play.
Edmonton vs Los Angeles Injury Report
Oilers forward Josh Archibald (COVID-related heart condition) gained medical clearance to play and was in the lineup for Game 2.
“He’s an available player for us going forward.” — Jay Woodcroft on Josh Archibald.
Woodcroft says the unvaccinated Archibald has received a medical exemption to travel because of his myocarditis diagnosis.

LA is without defenseman Drew Doughty (wrist), forward Viktor Arvidsson (personal) and defenseman Sean Walker (lower body).
Smith Ends Lengthy Drought
In Game 1, it was a puck-handling gaffe by Oilers goalie Mike Smith that opened the door to LA’s victory. However, in Game 2 Smith was flawless. He stopped all 30 shots he faced for the shutout.

The Kings go as Jonathan Quick goes. The two-time Cup winner was a brick wall to start Game 2, holding the Oilers at bay for as long as he could. Eventually, though, the floodgates opened.
