A 6-0 drubbing of the Los Angeles Kings in Game 2 of their Stanley Cup Western Conference opening-round playoff series is restoring the faith in the Edmonton Oilers, both among the Oilers supporters and, evidently, NHL oddsmakers.

As this series heads to Los Angeles for Game 3, it’s the visiting Oilers who are being set as -145 road favorites in the NHL odds. The Kings are 50-34 against the spread this season. That works out to 59.5% and is tied for #1 among the NHL’s 16 playoff teams.

Edmonton vs Los Angeles NHL Betting Trends

Edmonton’s -145 odds provide the Oilers with an implied probability of victory of 56.7%. In the NHL betting trends, the public is leaning toward Edmonton and the over.

There are 59% of the bets placed against the spread on the Oilers at -1.5. The moneyline splits are also showing 59% of the bets are backing the Oilers at -145 odds. Goals are also being anticipated, because 84% of the public bets are on the Over (6).

Edmonton’s six-goal outburst in Game 2 was the club’s most impressive offensive showing in a playoff game in six years. The Oilers whipped the Anaheim Ducks 7-1 at home in Game 6 of their 2016 second-round series. Interestingly, though, they went to the Honda Center – not all that far from LA – and lost Game 7 by a 2-1 count.

In Game 1, Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft shortened his bench. He gave five forwards over 20 minutes of ice time and leaned heavily on his top-two defense pairings. Woodcroft balanced the ice time of his players more evenly in Game 2, with Edmonton relying on depth to wear down the Kings.

Eight Kings players made their Stanley cup debuts in Game 1 of this series. That adrenlaine rush used up, the reality of how difficult the playoffs are seemed to hit them hard in Game 2. While Edmonton went 2-for-4 on the power play, LA was 0-for-4 and surrendered a shorthanded goal to Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse to fall behind 2-0.

LA held a 12-6 shot advantage in the scoreless opening frame of Game 2. The Kings rely on playing a tight-checking style and keeping the game close. Edmonton will want to again raise the tempo in Game 3 and force LA to open up the pace of play.

Edmonton vs Los Angeles Injury Report

Oilers forward Josh Archibald (COVID-related heart condition) gained medical clearance to play and was in the lineup for Game 2.

LA is without defenseman Drew Doughty (wrist), forward Viktor Arvidsson (personal) and defenseman Sean Walker (lower body).

Smith Ends Lengthy Drought

In Game 1, it was a puck-handling gaffe by Oilers goalie Mike Smith that opened the door to LA’s victory. However, in Game 2 Smith was flawless. He stopped all 30 shots he faced for the shutout.

The victory ended Smith’s 10-game Stanley Cup losing skid. He hadn’t won since posting a 26-save shutout for the Calgary Flames against Colorado in Game 1 of the 2019 playoffs.

Oilers vs Kings Projected Starting Goalies

Team Goalie Record SV% GAA
Oilers Mike Smith 1-1 .938 2.03
Kings Jonathan Quick 1-1 .880 4.50

The Kings go as Jonathan Quick goes. The two-time Cup winner was a brick wall to start Game 2, holding the Oilers at bay for as long as he could. Eventually, though, the floodgates opened.

Quick is 1-7 in his last eight playoff games and 2-9 over the past 11 decisions. He’s 0-5 at home since winning Game 5 of the Stanley Cup final in 2014.

Oilers vs Kings Game 3 Prediction

Edmonton hasn’t won consecutive playoff games over the past 15 games that they’ve played going back to the second round of the 2016 postseason. The Oilers have won their last three visits to LA dating back to 2019. They’re also 5-2 straight up over their past seven road games.

The Kings have lost their last five home playoff games since winning the Stanley Cup in 2014. LA is 7-7 straight up over the club’s past 14 home games.
