Penguins Surging in NHL Odds

The Penguins are one of the hottest teams in the NHL odds entering the Battle of Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh has won nine straight games, including a 5-3 victory over St. Louis on Wednesday. Bryan Rust scored twice and had an assist, while Jake Guentzel extended his point streak to 15.

Pittsburgh has remarkably only trailed in one game during their winning streak. Defense has played a huge role in that success, as the Pens have limited nine of their past 10 opponents to under two goals. Goalie Tristan Jarry is having a Vezina-caliber season with a .932 save percentage.

The Penguins rank 11th in the NHL in goals scored per game despite missing several key pieces. Jeff Carter (COVID-19 protocol), Jason Zucker (lower body) and Evgeni Malkin (knee) remain sidelined for Pittsburgh.

Rodrigues is one of the players who has stepped up big-time with Pittsburgh’s injuries. Rodrigues has notched six goals in his past five games and ranks second on the team in scoring with 27 points in 32 games.

Flyers Betting Value as Home Underdogs

Philadelphia brings a three-game losing streak into Thursday’s NHL matchup with Pittsburgh. The Flyers went 1-2-1 on a West Coast road trip, including a 4-1 loss to Anaheim on Tuesday. Cam Atkinson scored the team’s lone goal, while Carter Hart made 26 saves in net.

Much like many other teams across the NHL, the Flyers have been hit hard by COVID. Top defenseman Ivan Provorov and captain Claude Giroux both entered COVID protocol on Tuesday, while Travis Konecny and Travis Sanheim were added to the list Wednesday.

The Flyers are one of the lowest-scoring teams in the league, averaging only 2.61 goals per game. Giroux is Philadelphia’s leading scorer with 29 points, while Atkinson paces the team in goals (13). Defensively, the Flyers are allowing 3.24 goals per game, which ranks 22nd in the NHL.

The Flyers haven’t been profitable as home underdogs, posting a 2-7 record when the road team is favored at Wells Fargo Center. The good news is the last time they were home underdogs vs Pittsburgh (May 21st), they dominated for a 7-2 win.

Penguins vs Flyers Pick & Prediction

The Penguins vs Flyers odds tell a story of two teams trending in different directions. This is a back-to-back situation for Pittsburgh, however, so fatigue becomes a potential concern. The Pens are 1-2-0 in the second half of back-to-backs this season, getting outscored a combined 12-5.

Flyers vs Penguins Recent Results

Date Home-Away Money Line Puck Line Over/Under

05/04/2021 PHI 3 – PIT 7 PIT PIT Over
05/03/2021 PHI 7 – PIT 2 PHI PHI Over
04/15/2021 PIT 1 – PHI 2 (SO) PHI PHI Under
03/06/2021 PIT 4 – PHI 3 PIT PHI Over

The Flyers and Penguins have alternated dominating this rivalry, with momentum currently favoring Pittsburgh. The Pens have won the last two meetings, including an OT victory this season. Crosby has dominated the Flyers, recording 24 goals and 115 points in 77 career games vs Philly.

Despite this being a back-to-back situation, the Penguins should have their way with Philadelphia on Thursday. The Flyers are missing way too many important pieces, while the Pens are much healthier and playing with rhythm.

The Penguins have been worth the juice as road favorites in the NHL odds, posting a 5-2 record when favored on the road. Back Mike Sullivan’s team to take advantage of a depleted Philadelphia squad Thursday evening.

Pick: Penguins ML (-180)
