Rangers on Remarkable Run
The Rangers have been the story of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs so far, reeling off seven straight wins to open the postseason. After sweeping the Washington Capitals in the first round, New York has taken a commanding 3-0 series lead over Carolina.
All three games against the Hurricanes have been tightly contested, one-goal affairs. The Rangers prevailed 3-2 in overtime in Game 3 on Thursday thanks to an Artemi Panarin game-winner. Panarin has been on fire, tallying four game-winning goals in the playoffs, tied for the most by a Rangers player in a single postseason.

New York’s special teams have been a major difference-maker against Carolina. The Rangers are clicking at 34.5% on the power play in the playoffs, third-best in the NHL. Meanwhile, their penalty kill has been nearly impenetrable, allowing just two goals on 32 times shorthanded (93.8%).
In this series, the Rangers are 4-for-13 with the man advantage and a perfect 15-for-15 on the PK.
Blueshirts’ netminder Igor Shesterkin has been exceptional in the postseason with a 2.01 GAA and a .935 save percentage in seven starts, saving 9.2 goals above expected.
The Rangers are also getting a boost with the return of forward Filip Chytil, who made his playoff debut in Game 3 after missing over six months with a head injury. Chytil skated 12:02 on the third line with Alexander Wennberg and Kaapo Kakko and earned praise from head coach Peter Laviolette for his play.
Canes’ Doomed by Special Teams
The Hurricanes find themselves in a do-or-die situation, needing a win to avoid elimination and a second straight playoff sweep after falling to the Florida Panthers in the second round last year. Carolina has played the Rangers tight but has come out on the wrong end of three one-goal losses.
Head coach Rod Brind’Amour has a big decision to make in net for Game 4. Frederik Andersen started the first seven games of the playoffs for the Hurricanes but was given a breather in Game 3 in favor of rookie Pyotr Kochetkov.
Rod Brind’Amour said he was going to change the mojo and not announce who will be the Hurricanes starting goalie tonight. He said he has made a decision but won’t reveal it. Frederik Andersen started Games 1 and 2. Pyotr Kochetkov started Game 3.

Andersen has saved 1.9 goals above expected in the postseason, while Kochetkov allowed the overtime winner and finished with -0.5 goals saved above expected in his playoff debut. With the season on the line, the smart money is on Brind’Amour going back to his veteran Andersen.
Carolina has outshot New York in every game of the series, often by wide margins like in Games 2 and 3. However, the Hurricanes’ share of expected goals has been relatively even, suggesting that a lot of those shots haven’t been high-danger chances against Shesterkin.
Special teams have really hurt the Hurricanes. They are 0-for-15 on the power play in the series and have allowed a shorthanded goal. For the playoffs, Carolina ranks second-to-last among remaining teams in both power play (16.7%) and penalty kill (70.8%) percentage.
Rangers vs Hurricanes Prediction Game 4
While the Hurricanes certainly have the talent and home-ice advantage to extend this series, it’s hard to bet against a Rangers team that has yet to lose in the playoffs and is playing with sky-high confidence. Shesterkin gives New York a huge edge in net, and the special teams battle has been one-sided in the Rangers’ favor.
Carolina will surely come out desperate, but the Rangers have shown tremendous poise in bouncing back from deficits and pulling out close games. Brind’Amour will have his team ready to play, but barring a huge performance from Aho or Svechnikov, the Hurricanes just haven’t gotten the timely goals they’ve needed.
The Rangers are enticing underdogs at +125, as they have all the ingredients to pull off the sweep and get plenty of rest before the Eastern Conference Final. Expect another tight, low-scoring battle, but for Shesterkin and the Rangers to ultimately prevail. The Blueshirts will make some history in Raleigh on Saturday night.
