  • I’ve made my Rangers vs Red Wings prediction for Friday night at Little Caesars Arena
  • Detroit enters on a five-game home winning streak, while New York ranks last in goals per game

The Red Wings host the Rangers on Friday night in an Original Six matchup between two teams heading in opposite directions. Detroit sits 9-5 and has won five straight at Little Caesars Arena. New York enters at 6-6-2 but hasn’t won at home all season, going 0-5-1 at Madison Square Garden while posting a 6-1-1 road record.

Both teams are coming off shutout losses. The Rangers fell to Carolina 3-0 on Tuesday, while the Red Wings were blanked by Vegas 1-0 the same night. The difference is Detroit has been scoring all season – New York ranks dead last in the NHL at 2.21 goals per game.

Puck drop is set for 7:00 pm ET from Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, with NHL Network handling the broadcast.

My Red Wings vs Rangers prediction centers on Detroit’s offensive advantage against a Rangers team that can’t score. New York ranks 32nd in the NHL at 2.21 goals per game, and their power play is even worse – converting at just 11.1%, which is 31st in the league.

The Rangers have generated quality looks all season. They rank third in expected goals percentage at 5-on-5 and control 61.97% of high-danger chances. But the puck won’t go in. They’re shooting 6.89% at 5-on-5, which is the second-worst mark in hockey.

Artemi Panarin has just two goals and seven points in 14 games after averaging over a point per game throughout his Rangers career. Mika Zibanejad said he’s never experienced anything like getting quality looks and not scoring. The frustration is obvious.

Detroit’s offense is clicking. Dylan Larkin leads with 18 points in 14 games (8 goals, 10 assists). Alex DeBrincat has heated up with seven points in his last five games after a slow start. The Red Wings rank 19th at three goals per game, which isn’t elite but looks great compared to New York’s struggles.

Rangers vs Red Wings 2025-26 Stats

11.1% (31st)Power Play %22.7% (9th)
.908 (4th)Save %.891 (18th)

The special teams gap is massive. Detroit converts at 22.7% on the power play (9th in the NHL) while New York sits at 11.1% (31st). The Rangers generate the third-most shot attempts on the man advantage and control 93.6% of shot attempts, but they’re shooting 5.4% – the worst mark in the league.

New York’s defense has been elite, ranking 1st in goals against per game at 2.43. Igor Shesterkin has been one of the few bright spots with a 2.26 GAA and .915 save percentage. Jonathan Quick has been even better as the backup, posting a 1.35 GAA and .941 save percentage with one shutout.

Detroit’s goaltending situation is less clear. Cam Talbot is 5-1-0 with a 2.76 GAA and .897 save percentage. John Gibson sits at 4-4-0 with a 3.03 GAA and .890 save percentage. Per the NHL odds, that goaltending edge for New York keeps this line tight despite their offensive struggles.

Patrick Kane returned to practice Thursday after missing nine games with an upper-body injury. He’s day-to-day for Friday but could provide a boost if he plays. Vincent Trocheck remains out for New York on long-term injured reserve.

The Red Wings moneyline at -115 is my best bet. They’re home, they’re scoring, and the Rangers simply can’t put the puck in the net right now. Detroit has won five straight at Little Caesars Arena and should make it six against a team that’s scored one or zero goals in seven of their eight losses.

The trends heavily favor Detroit in this spot. The Red Wings are 6-4 straight up and 6-4 against the spread in their last 10 games. The Rangers are 4-4-2 straight up and 4-6 ATS over that same stretch.

New York has historically dominated the head-to-head meetings, winning eight of the last 10 and six straight overall. But those trends don’t account for how differently these teams are playing this season. The Rangers are unbeaten in regulation when scoring three or more goals (5-0-1), but they’ve hit that mark just six times in 14 games.

The total has gone under in the last two games for both teams. Over the last 10, Detroit has seen five overs, three unders and two pushes. The Rangers have hit four overs and six unders. With both teams coming off shutout losses and New York’s offense broken, the under 5.5 is worth considering for an SGP.
