The Anaheim Ducks return to their home ice tonight to face the San Jose Sharks. Anaheim is desperate to snap a brutal six-game losing streak and maintain their fragile hold on third place in the Pacific division.

San Jose meanwhile, is fighting to keep their Western Conference Wild Card hopes alive. Online sportsbooks are siding with the Ducks in the latest NHL odds, but I’m more interested in betting the game’s 6.5 goal total.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7 PM PT, 10 PM ET, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, with ESPN+ providing the broadcast coverage.

I’m betting over 6.5 goals tonight, expecting these two teams to light the lamp early and often. The over has cashed in four straight meetings between San Jose and Anaheim, while that side of the total has also hit in four of the Ducks last five games overall.

Sticking with the trends, the over has hit in four of the Sharks last six matchups, including last time out versus the Oilers.

The numbers paint a picture of two deeply flawed defensive teams. Both squads surrender over 3.29 goals per game and feature abysmal team save percentages (San Jose at .881, Anaheim at .877). Special teams offer no bailout either, with both penalty kill units operating below an 80% benchmark.

The most glaring mismatch is Anaheim’s superior offensive shot generation (30.67 shots per game vs. San Jose’s 25.82). While the Sharks counter with a more efficient 11.8% team shooting percentage and a sharper power play (20.7%), the sheer volume of rubber Anaheim puts on net is the primary catalyst driving my over 6.5 goals prediction.

With both teams bleeding high-danger chances in the defensive zone and playing loose late in the year, expect plenty of red lights to flash at the Honda Center.

If there is one skater who consistently elevates his offensive volume against San Jose, it is Mason McTavish. He’s eclipsed 1.5 shots on goal in 6 straight games against the Sharks, averaging a massive 4.5 shots per game in that span.

When Anaheim is favored and expected to control the neutral zone, Troy Terry drives the offensive pace and funnels pucks to the net. Terry has crushed the 2.5 shots on goal mark in 4 straight games as a betting favorite, averaging 5.5 shots per game in those specific spots.

For San Jose, fatigue hasn’t stopped William Eklund from finding shooting lanes. Even with the team playing a grueling schedule, Eklund maintains his offensive aggression. Eklund has gone over 1.5 shots on goal in 7 of his last 8 games played on the second half of a back-to-back , averaging 2.62 shots per game under those exhausting conditions.
