Stars Now +450 to Win Stanley Cup After Double-OT Victory Over Lightning in Game 5

Corey Perry and the Dallas Stars have extended the 2020 Stanley Cup final to Game 6. Thanks to a 3-2 double OT win on Saturday night, Dallas saw its odds improve from +1500 to +450.

Perry scored 9:23 into the second overtime period to delay any championships plans held by the Tampa Bay Lightning. As the series shifts to Game 6, the odds have shifted dramatically. The Stars are no longer the +1500 longshots they were heading into Game 5. With that in mind, here’s an outlook for both teams as the Stanley Cup final continues.

Stars Veterans Proving More Than Capable
The Stars three oldest players made a huge impact in Game 5. Perry scored twice, including the winner, which was obviously the most pivotal moment. The two goals weren’t by fluke; Perry was one of the most dominant players the entire game. He tallied nine shots on goal, which was four more than anyone else on either team. Joe Pavelski played a big role as well, tying the game late in the third period to set the table for Perry’s heroics.

Anton Khudobin is the next-oldest player on the roster and entered the game without much confidence from outsiders. Having allowed 13 goals in the last three games, it was tough to imagine the 34=year-old having enough in the tank playing on back to back nights.
Khudobin answered all questions stopping 39 of 41 shots for a sparkling .951 save percentage. There will be no more questions about whether Ben Bishop or even the untested Jake Oettinger should take over the crease; it’s ride-or-die with Khudobin.
Stamkos Unfit to Play Again in Game 5
The return of Steven Stamkos in Game 3 certainly appears to be the last time we’ll see him in these playoffs. He made an impact, scoring a goal, but played only 2:47. He sat the rest of that game and the two after it, including Saturday night’s double-overtime defeat. The rest of the team has 15 goals in five games, so the offense is definitely still there. But it appears the only time we’ll see Stamkos in uniform again will be if he joins the team for the Stanley Cup ceremony. That is of course, if the Lightning are able to close the series in Game 6 or 7.

One bit of positive news is Brayden Point appears to be at or near one-hundred percent. After missing several games of the Eastern Conference final, he’s been taking a full shift in this series. In Game 5, he played 28:43, which is his third-highest total of the playoffs. Expect to see Point and linemates Nikita Kucherov and Ondrej Palat early and often as Tampa Bay aims to clinch the the Stanley Cup on Monday.
