Tampa Bay Missed Andrei Vasilevskiy

The bettors keep hammering Tampa Bay (59% of the money) even with Vasilevskiy getting a rest last weekend in Detroit. However, he is clearly the right goaltender against the best teams. Vasilevskiy stopped 20 of 22 shots on Wednesday night. Overall, in his last seven meetings against Dallas, the Russian has yielded just ten goals. That’s it. He sports a stellar .943 save percentage in that span.

Tampa Bay has ridden their star goalie to another outstanding season. Not only does he have 31 wins in 40 appearances, but Vasilevskiy also has won 18 of his 20 starts at home. This is all while posting a 1.75 goals-against-average and a .936 save percentage.

The Lightning again has won 21 of 27 games overall at Amalie Arena. It is no wonder why they rank in the top-five in shots allowed, goals-against average, and the penalty kill. That big reason is none other than Andrei Vasilevskiy.

Dallas Has Tyler Seguin Back but Is It Too Late?

The Stars are still battling with the Predators in their race for the final playoff spot in the Central Division. Losing five straight games at the worst possible time (including their games in hand on Nashville) has pushed them to the brink. In those five contests, Dallas scored two or fewer goals four times and was shut out twice. That is not a good recipe for success even with Tyler Seguin scoring twice in his return so far. It is like Dallas was always just a little bit short-handed all season.

Granted, other injuries have derailed the Dallas Stars, like Alexander Radulov. However, it was Seguin’s presence at the pivot that allowed the rest of the team to slot into their respective roles with ease. It just has felt like something has always been missing this season for Dallas.

Lightning Clamp Down Defensively

Tampa Bay allowed just 22 shots against the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night. Andrei Vasilevskiy has only faced 25 shots a night in his meetings this year versus Dallas overall.

The Lightning rank fifth in shots allowed at just 28.1 per game this season, and their penalty kill is also fifth in the league at 83.6%. This is in spite of the fact that they take the fifth-most minors in the league (9.4 penalty minutes per contest).

This illustrates the Tampa Bay Lightning perfectly. Erik Cernak’s growth this past season is another reason why the Lightning have been able to contend for the Central Division crown even without Steven Stamkos for parts of the year and Nikita Kucherov all season. It is their balance on both sides of the puck that makes them hard to play and score against. Just ask the Dallas Stars in 2021.

Stars vs Lightning Best Bet

The Lightning and Stars play for the eighth and final time this season. Andrei Vasilevskiy is expected to start again for the Tampa Bay Lightning and Anton Khudobin for the Stars.

Tampa Bay has won seven of its previous ten games, while Dallas has won just four of its last ten games. The outcome may be a bit closer, but the Tampa Bay Lightning on the puck line is the pick again.

Pick: Lightning -1.5 (+155)
