The Mammoth host the Avalanche on Tuesday night in a Central Division showdown between two of the best defensive teams in the league. Utah wraps up a four-game homestand where they’ve been perfect at 3-0, while Colorado looks to stay unbeaten in regulation.

These teams just met on October 9th in Denver, with the Avs taking a 2-1 decision. Utah will be looking for revenge in front of their home crowd.

Puck drop is set for 10:00 pm ET from Delta Center in Salt Lake City, with ESPN handling the broadcast.

Avalanche vs Mammoth Odds

Colorado is currently a -145 moneyline favorite on average and is laying 1.5 goals on the puck line around +170 odds. Utah comes back as a +125 underdog, while the total now sits at 6 at most books.

Avalanche vs Mammoth Prediction

My Avalanche vs Mammoth prediction focuses on what should be another defensive battle between two clubs that have been stingy all season. When these teams met on October 9th, they combined for just three goals in Colorado’s 2-1 win. The underlying numbers suggest we’re in for more of the same.

Colorado allows 1.50 goals per game, the best mark in the NHL. They’re the only team still in single digits for total goals allowed with nine through six games. The Avs have given up just one goal in each of their five wins, which is a ridiculous stat line.

Utah isn’t far behind. The Mammoth rank fourth in the league at 2.17 goals against per game, and they’re the best team in hockey at limiting shots. Utah allows just 21.67 shots per game, which makes life easy for their goaltenders.

The goalie matchup heavily favors the visitors. Scott Wedgewood has been sensational for Colorado, posting a 5-0-1 record with a 1.48 GAA and .938 save percentage. He’s on a ridiculous run dating back to last season, going 13-0-2 in his last 15 starts. Wedgewood saved 32 of 33 shots in that first meeting with Utah.

Karel Vejmelka gets the start for the Mammoth with a 3-1 record, 2.00 GAA and .912 save percentage. Those are solid numbers, but Wedgewood has been on another level to start the year.

Colorado holds slight edges in the advanced metrics, particularly in expected goals for percentage and high-danger chances. The Avs generate 60% of high-danger chances at 5-on-5, which gives them plenty of quality looks. But Utah has been exceptional at converting their chances, posting a 71.43% rate on high-danger goals.

The Mammoth offense has been solid at home during this three-game winning streak, averaging four goals per game. Nick Schmaltz has been on fire with nine points in six games, including a hat trick against San Jose. Clayton Keller has chipped in with seven points, and the duo has combined for 12 points in the last two wins.

Nathan MacKinnon leads Colorado with 10 points through six games, tied with Martin Necas. MacKinnon scored twice in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Boston and has been the engine that drives this offense. Cale Makar has five assists from the blueline, and the Avs have weapons throughout their lineup.

This game has all the makings of another low-scoring affair. Both teams rank in the top four for goals against, and both goalies are playing at an elite level. The under has hit in all four meetings between these teams dating back to last season.

The first matchup between these clubs totaled just three goals, and that wasn’t a fluke. Colorado allowed just 14 shots in Saturday’s win over Boston, which shows how dominant their defense can be when they’re locked in. Utah’s ability to limit shots gives them a chance to keep this game tight even against a superior opponent.

The total opened at 6.5 at some books in the Tuesday NHL odds, before falling to 6. You can still find Under 6.5 at -138 at FanDuel, which offers the best value on the board.

Wedgewood is playing out of his mind right now, and Utah’s offense lacks the firepower to consistently beat him. The Mammoth have been relying on their power play and opportunistic scoring, but Colorado ranks ninth in penalty kill percentage at 87.5%. That makes life even tougher for Utah’s attack.

The Avalanche offense has been solid, but they’ve been winning games 4-1 and 3-1 rather than blowing teams out. Against a defense that allows the fewest shots in the league, Colorado will have to work for every goal they get.

My Mammoth vs Avalanche best bet is under 6.5 at -138. That extra half goal of cushion is worth the juice considering this game still features offensive star power. If you’re getting 6 at plus money, that works too, but 6.5 gives you more breathing room in what should be a tight, low-scoring game.
