- The social media structure is about to change, as Instagram announces plans to remove viewing “likes” from users’ posts other than your own
- Instagram announces the decision as a method to help downplay users’ need for validation
- The stir is causing much controversy in the social media realm
Anyone who uses Instagram knows what it feels like to see their like count roll in on a specific post. It’s a modern-day validation unlike any other feeling. And now, that validation is going to be taken away.
Instagram is responding to the stir in which social media has become all too important, and this move is a big decision that could impact the platform in several ways. One seemingly small change can have so many reactions and repercussions.
Will Facebook Stock Drop the Day After Likes are Removed?

No | +100 |
Odds taken November 18, 2019
Instagram, which was purchased by social media behemoth Facebook for a cool $1 billion in 2012, has arguably become more relevant and integral to society than Facebook itself.
Around the time of the Instagram acquisition, Facebook went public the same year. Stock in the platform has mostly climbed steadily, showing a wise purchase for those who bought in early. But this Instagram shakeup could affect both platforms in a big way.
Guessing that removing Instagram’s most achievable and accessible feature will impact the Facebook stock negatively isn’t too far off from reality. Never underestimate the desire human beings have for being complimented. And without that little double-tap feature on Instagram posts, usership– and therfore stock quality– will dip at least a little bit.

People Won’t Like This
The “like removal” news is being rolled out globally after being initially trialed in select markets. Now, the entire world is seeing this new update implemented. But will the change impact pre-existing content?
We know future posts will not allow users to see how many people like new content, but it’s uncertain whether or not Instagram will remove being able to like posts completely.
It took a lot of work for Instagram users to rack up the likes on their posts. From sponsored to content to verified accounts to networking their butts off, users have spent a lot of time and energy trying to get likes on their posts.
Starting today, we’re expanding our test of private like counts globally. If you’re in the test, you’ll no longer see the total number of likes and views on photos and videos posted to Feed unless they’re your own. pic.twitter.com/DztSH0xiq2

Instagram doesn’t seem to care what users want or desire and is making decisions on what they think the better option is for their community. As a method of being consistent and cohesive, it’s quite easy to imagine they’ll wipe “likes” out of the picture altogether as if they never existed in the first place.

First Celebrity to Delete Instagram
Odds | Odds |
---|---|
Kylie Jenner | +200 |
Kim Kardashian | +225 |
Selena Gomez | +250 |
The Rock | +300 |
Logging Off
Out of all the multi-followed stars on the platform, it’s only a matter of time before one of the validation-seeking accounts puts up a fight and deletes their account as a means to strike against this decision.
Easily one of the most followed and beloved accounts is Kylie Jenner. Her feed is full of validation-seeking selfies, baby photos, and product rollouts. But she doesn’t necessarily need social media to live the privileged life she leads or to continue with her fame and success.

Jenner’s definitely the most likely star to put up a stink in face of this news. Other stars like The Rock and Selena Gomez are more likely to not care much at all.
Pick: Kylie Jenner (+200)
Will a New Social Media Overtake Instagram by 2021?

Will Instagram become redundant or obsolete in face of this news? Doubtful.
We’ve already seen the app go through many iterations, transformations, and updates. This new change is undeniably the biggest maneuver to date, but it’s not enough to send such a big social force belly up.
Pick: No (-140)
