  • Serie A kicks off on August 24
  • Online sportsbooks are offering a series of over/under goalscorer props
  • Ronaldo looking to better his 2018/19 total of 21

Italy’s Serie A kicks off on August 24 when Juventus head to Parma for the start of their title defense at 12:00 pm EST. The reigning champions are hotly-tipped to retain the trophy and their attack will be again led by Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese striker is one of a group who have been offered up by online sportsbooks for some over/under props, and so I’ve taken a look to see if there is any value to be had.

Total Goals 2019/20 – Cristiano Ronaldo Odds

Goal Total 2019/20 2018/19 Goals  Over Odds  Under Odds
24.5 21 -125 -105

All odds taken 08/20/19.

At 34-years-of-age, Ronaldo should really be in the twilight of his career but such is his fitness and desire to still play at the very highest level, he shows no signs at all of slowing up. While his 21 goals in Serie A last season, from 31 games, were at the lower end of his per-season totals of the last decade, it was still a fine return in a league where goals are hard to come by.

On the premise that Juve are showing the same desire as Ronaldo to retain their title, another good season looks almost certain in Turin and everything points to Ronaldo bettering 21 goals this time around.

My pick: Ronaldo to get 25 goals or more (-125)

Total Goals 2019/20 – Fabio Quagliarella Odds

Goal Total 2019/20 2018/19 Goals  Over Odds  Under Odds
17.5 26 -125 -105

Last season’s leading scorer in Serie A is like a fine wine and gets better and better with age. Now aged 36, Quagliarella had his most productive season ever last time out, scoring 26 goals in his 37 league games.

The much-travelled striker now leads the line at Sampdoria, having previously played for Napoli, Juventus and Torino, and to have scored 26 times for a team that finished ninth in the table was some achievement.

Given that oddsmakers have pitched this one at just 17.5 goals, this looks easy money, with only injury or a Sampdoria meltdown looking likely to stop Quagliarella reaching at least 20.

My pick: Quagliarella to score 18 or more goals (-105)

Total Goals 2019/20 – Ciro Immobile Odds

Goal Total 2019/20 2018/19 Goals  Over Odds  Under Odds
18.5 15 -125 -105

As well as having a name that’s handmade to fit into a football song, Ciro Immobile is a player who has always scored goals in Serie A. Like Quagliarella, Immobile too has played for many clubs – ten if you include loan spells – and has scored goals wherever he has played, starting at Juventus as a youngster, and now at Lazio.

He peaked in 2017/18 when he scored 29 goals in his 33 games for his current club, and so will have been a little disappointed to have scored 15 times from his 36 outings last season, but at 29-years-of-age he is now at the peak of his powers.

Lazio, who finished eighth last season and qualified for the Europa League, is an ambitious team who are aiming for top six this season, and so will be leaning heavily on Immobile to score the goals to get them there. Given that he scored 29 goals in 2017/18, I can see him smashing the 20 goal mark this time around.

My pick: Immobile to score more than 19 goals (-125)

Total Goals 2019/20 – Dries Mertens Odds

Goal Total 2019/20 2018/19 Goals  Over Odds  Under Odds
14.5 16 +105 -135

The Belgian international winger/striker is about to embark on his seventh season at Napoli, during which time he has averaged over 14 goals per season. This makes the 14.5 tipping point a fair one, and one that looks well within his grasp, especially when we consider his three most recent seasons have yielded 28, 18 and 17 goals respectively.

With Napoli again looking to be Juve’s biggest rivals for the title, they look almost certain to be amongst the goals again and so too does Mertens.

So, on that basis, I reckon that +105 for 15 goals or more is highly doable for Mertens and offers great value.

My pick: Mertens to score 15 or more (+105)
