Inter the Super Cup Champions!

Inter’s season goes from strength to strength and their decision to replace  Antonio Conte with Simone Inzaghi in the coach’s hot seat has been more than justified. On Wednesday evening, Inzaghi claimed his first trophy for the Milan club when his team edged past their great rivals Juventus to win the Italian Super Cup.

It was a game won in the most dramatic fashion possible when with the final kick of extra-time, Inter sub, Alexis Sanchez turned the ball into the net to spark huge celebrations in the blue half of Milan. Now for Inter, it is back to the business of retaining their scudetto title with a tricky-looking match against fourth-placed Atalanta, who are just eight points behind them.

Twelve Unbeaten in Serie A for the Nerazzurri

The good news for Inter is that they are a good run of form, one that has taken them 12 league games unbeaten, and last weekend they consolidated their lead at the top of the table with a 2-1 win over Lazio. It maintained their one-point lead over city rivals AC in what is becoming a fascinating title race.

Inter head to Bergamo aiming to score in their 40th consecutive Serie A match – a feat matched only by two other teams in the league’s history – and so for Atalanta to shut them out would, in itself, be a huge achievement. So far Inter have scored 51 times – at an average of 2.5 per game – and two of those came in the reverse fixture in the San Siro in September, which ended 2-2.

Atalanta Under Pressure from Juve

Atalanta is currently in fourth place and still in the title race but they notoriously struggle against the Milan teams, especially Inter. While they managed a draw in the San Siro in September, it is now six games without a win against the Nerazzurri – a run that must end if they are serious about a title challenge.

But so tight is it at the top of Serie A, Atalanta is also being chased down by fifth-placed Juventus – who are just three points adrift – and the fight for the Champions League places is almost as intense as the battle for the title.

They come into this in good shape though after emphatically beating Udinese 6-2 last weekend – their first game of 2022 – and followed it up with a 2-0 midweek win over Venezia in the Coppa Italia.

The Away Day Specialists

Coach Gian Piero Gasperini has put together a team capable of competing with the best in Italy on a consistent basis, but the Coppa Italia may be their most realistic chance of silverware – a competition in which they have been runners-up twice in the last three seasons.

What is worth noting though is that Atalanta is happier on the road than they are in the Gewiss Stadium. So far they have picked up just 12 points at home – winning just three times – compared to away from home where they have collected 29 points from their 11 games and are unbeaten.

Atalanta vs Inter Milan Prediction

Inter comes into this on the crest of a wave but has to come quickly back down to earth in order to continue their title charge. They will be confident though because Atalanta’s home form is so sketchy and I see the Nerazzurri edging this game by the odd goal.

Picks: Inter Milan to win (-205) / Inter Milan to win 2-1 (+700)
