As the home side, Austin FC is the -104 favorite on the three-way moneyline, but in order to advance, the Verde will have to do something they have so far failed to do in their two years in MLS: beat FC Dallas.

Over/Under & Spread

Despite both teams having advanced to this stage on penalties in the first round, following score draws, the Over 2.5 goals is being favored here to the tune of -148, with the Under at +108. Austin has a lot to do having scored 64 goals in the regular season, the third most in MLS, compared to Dallas’ fairly anemic 46, which was behind a number of non-playoff clubs. But a close match is expected, with Dallas at +1 heavily favored at -235 (compared to +190 for Austin at -1).

Austin Chasing History

If Austin FC are going to make the first conference final in franchise history, they are going to have to do something they’ve failed to do before. Josh Wolff’s team has never beaten its interstate rival in their five meetings since Austin debuted last season, with Dallas posting three wins and two draws so far.

However, Austin has been able to find the back of the Dallas net, with seven goals in those five games, versus 12 for Dallas. And the rivalry has swung back in Dallas’s favor slightly in 2022, with both games this season resulting in draws, including their most recent meeting, a 1-1 draw in Dallas on July 16th.

Resilient Dallas

Nico Estevez’s club might not have been flying high in the league standings this season, but Dallas did prove itself a hard team to beat. Dallas lost just six times on the road this season, which was the second-fewest of all Western Conference clubs, behind only Nashville. And while the team only won four road games all season, those four wins came on the home fields of playoff teams, proving that Estevez’s club can get up for the big games.

However, Austin lost only three games at home all season in league play, so Dallas will have its work cut out here.

Shootout Specialists

While both teams advanced to the conference semi-finals on spot kicks, FC Dallas has taken the art of grinding out a result to something of an art form.

The team has advanced in the playoffs just three times in the past seven years, but each time it has required penalties to do so, with the team having successfully converted its last 17 attempts in a row, which is a run of success nearly twice as long as any other team in MLS history.

Ferreira’s Fine Form

If there’s one player on the FC Dallas roster looking forward to Sunday’s matchup more than most, it’s Jesus Ferreira. Recently named MLS Young Player of the Year, following on from an 18-goal campaign, Ferreira has relished the games against Austin over his short time in the league, having registered four goals and an assist, with 15 shots, in the five games he’s played against the Verde.

Of course, Austin’s Sebastian Driussi and his 22 goals this year – just one back of Golden Boot winner Hany Mukhtar – should has plenty to say about that, particularly following his two goals and MLS playoff- record 12 shots in last week’s shootout win over Real Salt Lake.

Austin FC vs FC Dallas Prediction

FC Dallas have thrived on the road this year, and just seem to understand what it takes to go into an enemy stadium, diffuse the crowd and do whatever it takes to grind out a result, be it by a solitary goal or even by virtue of the shootout. This is likely to be a cagey affair with both teams desperate to avoid defeat to their interstate rival, but Dallas has Austin’s number and that should continue here.

Pick: FC Dallas (+250)
