For the first time in nearly three weeks the Bundesliga is back in action as Bayern Munich takes on Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday afternoon. Bayern will look to extend their lead atop the German top flight to 12 points as Borussia Dortmund faces the tough task this weekend of playing Eintracht Frankfurt.

Bayern Munich are the clear favorites in this match considering they are 8-0-1 at home this season. Conversely, Monchengladbach are a concerning 1-2-6 when playing on the road, a metric that Adi Hütter will want to look away from.

Regardless, these sides have already played twice this year and the results will surprise the average Bundesliga fan. After a 1-1 draw earlier in the season, Monchengladbach thrashed Bayern 5-0 in the DFB Pokal.

The Prussians used three different goal scorers to trounce a Bayern side featuring arguably their strongest eleven.

Considering Bayern beat Monchengladbach 6-0 at the end of last season, this match is must-watch and has goals written all over it.

COVID-19 Will Impact Both Sides Come Friday

Despite having almost a three week break, COVID-19 is still running rampant across the Bundesliga. On Friday, multiple players are going to miss the match meaning the managers might have to get a little creative with their starting elevens.

For example, Bayern will be without Lucas Hernandez, Manuel Neuer, Dayot Upamecano, Kingsley Coman, Tanguy Nianzou, Corentin Tolisso, Leroy Sane, Alphonso Davies and Omar Richards. Luckily, Julian Nagelsmann is getting Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka back from COVID-19 and injury, which should mitigate this lack of depth. Bayern’s offensive players including the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Serge Gnabry and Thomas Muller are all fit as well which really gives them little to complain about.

On the other hand, Monchengladbach will be without Mamadou Doucoure, Denis Zakaria, Joe Scally and Keanan Bennetts due to COVID-19. Additionally, Jordan Beyer and Jonas Hofmann will be out due to their own respective injuries. While this absentee list is shorter than that of Bayern’s, they have far less depth to select from. Specifically, the losses of Scally and Zakaria will be major misses for Monchengladbach.

Bayern’s Attack is Just Too Overpowering

I know, this sounds like utter chalk. But, when it comes to Bayern Munich and the Bundesliga, sometimes chalk is just the right choice. In this case, the chalk opinion is simply that Monchengladbach do not have the defense to cope with even a hindered Bayern Munich.

To be fair, their draw was at the start of the season, and the DFB-Pokal match very well could have just been a fluke. In recent history, these sides do like to trade blows. In fact, since 2017, Monchengladbach is 6-5-1 against Bayern in all competitions. Still, only one of those wins came at the Allianz.

More importantly, Bayern are well rested and can pick up their scintillating league form on Friday. before the Bundesliga break, they had won seven on the bounce since losing to Augsburg, outscoring opponents 20-4.

At 33 years old, Lewandowski somehow looks better than ever and it is always hard to count him out. The Polish striker has 19 goals already this season and historically, he does quite well against Monchengladbach. With 11 goal contributions in just 20 appearances against them, he is a decent prop bet in this match.
