Things are heating up in Germany’s top flight as we head into Bundesliga Matchday 16. After league leaders Bayern Munich suffered a 3-2 defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach last weekend, the Bavarians saw their lead in first place diminish to just two points over Leipzig.

Just five points separate the defending champions and Dortmund in fourth. Although there are lots of fixtures ahead, the title race is completely open at this point heading into Matchday 16.

Pick 1: Union Berlin vs Bayer Leverkusen

Two sides in the top six will clash on Friday in Berlin. Union has enjoyed a solid start to the term, currently in fifth place and just four points off their Bundesliga Matchday 16 counterparts, who sit in third spot.

Berlin hasn’t lost in their last five outings, however, three of them have been draws. Last Saturday, they took away a point against Wolfsburg in a 2-2 result after conceding a penalty in the 65th minute.

Considering this side finished in 11th place last season, their current position in the Bundesliga table is certainly promising. Urs Fischer’s squad has stepped up against top-notch opponents as well, beating Dortmund and tying Bayern on Matchday 11. Veteran striker Max Kruse has been a key component in the attack, bagging six goals and tallying five assists.

Leverkusen started off the year in prolific form. They went unbeaten in their first 12 matches, which put them above the rest at the top of the table. But then came a Round 13 meeting with Bayern Munich, who beat them on home soil by a 2-1 scoreline.

Since that defeat, Peter Bosz’s side has seen their form dwindle. Leverkusen ended up losing the following weekend to Frankfurt, then tied Werder Bremen last Saturday.

A convincing victory over Eintracht mid-week in the DFB Cup will give them some much-needed confidence though heading into this massive fixture against a quality Berlin side who continue to impress.

Leverkusen has shown real quality this term and it’s only a matter of time until they get back to their winning ways. However, Union certainly poses a threat. I’m going with a 1-1 draw here.

Pick: Draw +225

Pick 2: Wolfsburg vs RB Leipzig

Wout Weghorst and Wolfsburg will host Leipzig at Volkswagen Arena on Saturday in Bundesliga Matchday 16. The visitors are 2-1-2 in their last five appearances, drawing with Union Berlin last weekend. As per usual, Weghorst played a vital role, bagging a spot-kick in the second half to secure a point for his side.

Other than the Dutchman though, Oliver Glasner’s men have struggled to find the back of the net. They’ve scored just 22 times, with their star striker accounting for 10 of those goals. Defensively, Wolfsburg has been sharp, conceding just 17. Currently, in sixth place with 25 points, the Wolves are in a respectable spot at this point in the term, but their productivity in the final third needs to improve.

Leipzig can taste top spot, just two points off Bayern ahead of Bundesliga Matchday 16. They had an opportunity to move past the Bavarians on Matchday 15, but they suffered a 3-1 defeat by the hands of Borussia Dortmund thanks to Erling Haaland’s brace.

It was unlike Julian Nagelsmann’s backline to allow even three goals, considering they’ve conceded a Bundesliga-low 12 times this term. Before the loss to Dortmund, Leipzig had gone unbeaten in their last nine competitive matches. They have been in fine form and continue to remain heavily in the title race.

Leipzig has enjoyed real success against Wolfsburg in recent memory, going undefeated in their previous five meetings. Although the hosts haven’t lost on home turf yet this season, this will change on the weekend. Both teams don’t score a whole lot, so I’m predicting a slim one-goal victory for Leipzig while keeping their opponents scoreless.

Pick: RB Leipzig to Win to Nil (+280)

Pick 3: Stuttgart vs Borussia Monchengladbach

After being promoted prior to the 2020/21 season, Stuttgart has held their own thus far. They’re in 10th place and enter this match on Bundesliga Matchday 16 against Gladbach in great spirits after a 4-1 thrashing of Augsburg on Sunday.

Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side hasn’t faced any issues with scoring goals, even beating Dortmund 5-1 a month ago. Congolese international Silas Wamangituka is thriving in the top flight, already netting eight times and assisting another three. Strike partner Sasa Kalajdzic is also doing his part bagging five goals. With a lethal duo up top, Stuttgart has opened some eyes this term.

Despite booking their ticket to the Champions League Round of 16 for the first time in club history, Borussia Monchengladbach’s domestic season hasn’t been as impressive. Marco Rose’s men are currently in seventh place, but thankfully, not too far off the top four in terms of points with 24.

Last weekend’s brilliant victory over Bayern Munich will definitely give Gladbach a sense of optimism moving forward. Down two goals within the first 30 minutes, they surged back for a brace before the halftime whistle. Then just minutes into the second half, Florian Neuhaus fired them ahead for good.

It’s important to note that Borussia didn’t even have their French connection of Alassane Plea and Marcus Thuram on the pitch due to an injury and suspension. Nevertheless, they still managed to muster up a heroic comeback.

I do believe the visitors are going to have tons of confidence heading into this clash on Bundesliga Matchday 16 after beating arguably the best club in the world. But, Stuttgart does have some quality and won two of their last three against Gladbach. Their home form has lacked though, so I like Rose’s side with a one-goal victory here, with Stuttgart’s vibrant attack also netting once.

Pick: Borussia Monchengladbach Win and Both Teams to Score  (+270)
