The Canadian Championship Final takes place on Sunday afternoon and it should be a dazzling affair. The final features CF Montreal and Toronto FC, two sides that know each other all too well.
Both of these sides were drawn in at the quarterfinal stage of the competition and had to win two matches to reach the conclusion of the tournament.
For CF Montreal, they beat HFX Wanderers by a score of 3-1 and slid narrowly past Forge FC after 11 round of penalties settled the scoreless draw. Conversely, Toronto FC throttled York United, 4-0, and trotted past Pacific FC on a 2-1 score line.

The Canadian Championship Format
The Canadian Championship is a tournament that is more unfrequented by soccer fans and pundits. However, it represents so much for these two clubs. The winner of the match gets to lift the Voyageurs Cup, which is esteemed silverware in Canada.
Additionally, they get qualification into the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League. This competition is a single-elimination tournament with 16 CONCACAF teams; the winner earning rights to play in the FIFA Club World Cup.
Both CF Montreal and Toronto FC have been runners-up in this tournament before, so it is an accomplishment they want to claim.

Since the new Canadian Championship format began in 2011, these sides have squared off in the final on three separate occasions. Montreal took home the title in both 2014 and 2019, while Toronto FC snagged a head-to-head victory in 2017.
Both Teams Look to Salvage Poor Seasons
Sunday’s matinee final represents a chance for both of these clubs to salvage their utterly poor seasons. In fact, both CF Montreal and Toronto FC missed out on the MLS Playoffs. Toronto FC only gathered 28 points from 34 games this season, with a staggeringly dismal -27 goal differential.
More over, they finished the season spectacularly bad, failing to win a game from their last six. The only consolation was a 94th minute goal from Jozy Altidore against CF Montreal in a pivotal Canadian Classique that ended up having playoff implications for Montreal.

Meanwhile, CF Montreal finished on 46 points, just two shy of a playoff berth. Actually, if CF Montreal would have won their last match of the year against Orlando City, they would have qualified. Sadly, Jhegson Mendez and Daryl Dike had other plans for the Lions.

Aside from missing out on the playoffs, CF Montreal’s season was a bit of a mixed bag. They finished the season a bit sporadically. Their two losses against the New York Red Bulls and Orlando City were a bit expected. But, they were able to make up for it with three draws and two victories out of their last seven.
Romell Quioto and Djordje Mihailovic are the two main men of concern for CF Montreal. The attacking duo combined for 12 goals and 19 assists this season and will look to exploit Kemar Lawrence and Chris Mavinga in the Toronto back line.
Mihailovic, in specific, creates 4.38 shot opportunities per ninety minutes. If Toronto wants a shot at winning this match, they need to cut him off in the midfield.
CF Montreal vs Toronto FC H2H Results
Finally, let us look at the results of Canadian Classique or 401 Derby from afar. It is one of the fiercest rivalries in all of Canada not on ice, so expect a lot of fouls and yellow cards. Toronto actually has the advantage in this rivalry, winning 26 of 53 meetings, drawing 10 in addition.

Nonetheless, CF Montreal has dominated the rivalry this season, winning two and drawing one. They also outscored their Canadian neighbors in three games, 8-4. With the venue for the final being decided on coin flip, CF Montreal once again has the luxury of play host at the Saputo Stadium.
CF Montreal vs Toronto FC Best Bet
Overall, the best bet for this match is the CF Montreal moneyline. Toronto FC has the advantage overall, but this season they have been shocking. It is not difficult to get to the Canadian Championship Final and this is their first major test against another MLS opponent.
For those reasons, I favor Montreal at home to lift the Voyageurs Cup.
