The Liga MX Clausura is heating up as two, second-leg quarterfinal matches are set to be played on Saturday evening. For those unfamiliar, the Clausura is known as Liga MX’s closing tournament, which runs from January to May.

Twelve of the eighteen teams in Liga MX qualify, with four going straight into the quarterfinals and eight having to go through a play-in round.

Club America vs Puebla kicks off at 7:00pm ET with Pachuca vs San Luis kicking off behind it at 9:05pm ET. Two more second-leg quarterfinals will be played on Sunday to decide the final two semifinalists of this year’s Clausura.

Overall, the odds for this Liga MX Clausura match are very skewed in favor of Club America. In fact, the moneyline odds for Fernando Ortiz’s side are a juicy -177. In addition, the under on 2.5 total goals is the expected result with odds of -120.

Club America Looks to Keep Unbeaten Run Going

Firstly, let us take a look at how clinical Club America has been since early March. Somehow, someway, the Águilas managed to capture third place in the Clausura despite only collecting six points from their first nine games.

Since that horrific run of form, they have been on a completely new wavelength. In fact, since March 12th, Club America are unbeaten in nine games, only dropping points in three matches. Moreover, the Millonetas have only conceded twice along the way, which is an absolutely remarkable feat.

To be honest, a lot of this achievement has to be credited to Fernando Ortiz. He was only brought in as the Under-20 manager in January. After the horrific start to Clausura, he was appointed as the interim manager and has been worth his weight in gold. The Argentinean transformed their defense and after getting another fresh look at Puebla, I think it will be hard for them to find the back of the net again.

Puebla’s H2H Record vs the Águilas

Furthermore, we have to consider the head-to-head record between these two sides. Club America are 7-2-1 versus Puebla in their last ten meetings. However, the more concerning aspect is that Puebla has not won away at the Estadio Azteca since 2011.

While they held a lead on Club America for twenty-five minutes, the possession battle was even and they conceded more shots. At the nightmare ground that is the Azteca, it is hard to see them coming away with a positive result.

Pick: Club America to win to nil (+160)

Pachuca vs San Luis Odds

Matchup Spread Moneyline Total
Pachuca vs San Luis PAC -0.75 (-127) | SLU +0.75 (+100) PAC -167 | SLU +410 | DRAW +280 Ov 2.5 (-118) | Un 2.5 (-112)

For this match, the moneyline odds are again favoring the home side, Pachuca at -167. However, there is some good value in San Luis to cover the +0.75 spread with even money odds of +100.

Pachuca Needs to Avoid a Historic Upset

The second match on Saturday evening is extremely fun because it could be one of the more significant Liga MX upsets.

Pachuca finished Clausura in first place on 38 points, scoring a formidable tally of 30 goals. Offensively, they are one of the more brilliant sides in the league. Particularly, Nicolás Ibáñez and Víctor Guzmán have had solid campaigns, combining for twenty goals.

Ironically, this is Ibáñez’s first year at Pachuca, after a two-year stint at San Luis. However, he did not do his old club any favors in the first leg, heading in two wonderful goals.

Nonetheless, Pachuca does not have the most air-tight defense. San Luis exploited this in the first leg, converting on a penalty in the 25th minute. Marcelo Méndez’s side fought until the very end and ultimately was able to grab their late equalizer thanks to a couple of missed clearance opportunities and a majestic Juan Sanabria volley.

But, their test on Saturday will be harder away from home. I do not think San Luis will advance, but I do think they put up a fight and maybe even claw in a goal. In turn, I favor the over on 2.5 total goals.

Pick: Over 2.5 total goals (-118)
