Cristiano Ronaldo enters his third season in Italian football this weekend aiming to finish top of the Serie A goal-scoring charts for the first time.

The Portuguese Juventus superstar kicks off the new campaign in an away fixture at Sampdoria on Sunday priced as favorite to be the competition’s leading marksman as his team embark on a new era under new coach Andrea Pirlo.

But with Internazionale having enjoyed their strongest season for a decade in 2019-20, Ronaldo will surely face a demanding challenge in the individual goal-getting stakes from the Milan club’s imposing forward Romelu Lukaku.

Last season’s top scorer was Ciro Immobile who scored a sensational 36 times in the league for Lazio and has recently signed a new five-year contract to underline how happy he is leading the line for the Roman outfit.

Oddsmakers price Ronaldo as the favorite to be “CapoCannonieri” – literally Top Gun –  in Serie A  at +175.

Lukaku is rated at +300 with Immobile at +400 and Victor Osimhen fourth favorite at +700 after his $110 million move to Napoli from Lille.

At this price, Ronaldo looks the best value to add a successful swansong to his glittering career under a manager who should inspire him to achieve even more.

Ronaldo scored 31 league goals last season while Lukaku hit 23 and Osimhen grabbed 13 in France’s Ligue 1.

Still Strong at 35 Years Old

Ronaldo is now 35 years old but his powers show little sign of waning.

He is likely to be rejuvenated by the appointment of the team’s new coach in Turin, another superstar, the elegant and stylish former midfielder Pirlo.

The 37 goals Ronaldo claimed in all competitions last season was a joint record for the club.

Juventus won their ninth straight league title last season but they were not completely convincing and there was unrest under coach Maurizio Sarri.

However, the quest for a landmark 10th successive title should also spark more motivation around the club.

Ronaldo has already shown this season that his ceaseless appetite for goals is undiminished.

Ronaldo is also keen to add another individual Ballon d’Or title to his collection of five prizes after failing to win since 2017.

Lionel Messi has collected six Ballon d’Or titles and with Barcelona in disarray, this season offers Ronaldo a great chance to catch up.

When he scored twice for Portugal against Sweden in Stockholm on September 8 in UEFA’S Nations League, it took his international tally to 101 strikes.

He also scored in Juventus’ sole pre-season friendly – a 5-0 win against Novarra – last Sunday.

Melo Signing May Be Critical

The summer re-building at Juventus has included the signing of Brazilian playmaker Arthur Melo from Barcelona which could increase the flow of scoring opportunities for Ronaldo.

The second favorite Lukaku was the driving force for Inter as they finished runners-up in Serie A – their highest placing for nine years – and reached the Europa League final where they were defeated by Sevilla.

The Belgian striker was re-invigorated by his move from Manchester United in 2019 and hit 34 goals in all competitions for Inter.

Lukaku finished last season in powerful form as he scored five times in Inter’s four ties in the Europa League mini-tournament.

At the age of 27, he is entering his peak years and this could pose a threat to Ronaldo’s hopes of topping the charts.

Lukaku finished last season in powerful form as he scored five times in Inter’s four ties in the Europa League mini-tournament played in Germany.

Inter coach Conte is determined to continue the revival he has sparked at Inter and the signing of speedy wing-back Achraf Hakimi could increase the flow of chances for Lukaku.

Immobile Claimed Golden Boot

Immobile’s 36 goals for Lazio made him the first player from outside of the Real Madrid-Barcelona axis since 2009 to win UEFA’S Golden Boot award for Europe’s leading league goal-scorer.

The 30-year-old was also Serie A’s leading scorer in 2013-14 with 22 goals for Torino.

But there are questions in Italy about whether Lazio can maintain the impressive form of last season when they finished fourth.

There have been no headline-grabbing signings at the club and they may be distracted from league competition after qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in over a decade.

Nigerian Osimhen has already scored two hat-tricks in low-key pre-season friendlies for Napoli.

At 21, he is relatively inexperienced and will be making a big step up into Serie A after one season in France’s less competitive Ligue1.

Pick: Cristiano Ronaldo +175
