Cruz Azul has maintained leadership of Mexico’s Liga MX Clausura tournament for the past two rounds of fixtures and hopes are growing that they can be surprise winners of their first league title since 1997.

A 4-2 win at home against Xolos Tijuana last weekend made it five straight league victories in a row for the team based at Mexico City’s massive and iconic Azteca Stadium.

That stretched their unbeaten run to seven league games and they have 19 points from nine games. But they are priced only as third favorites to win at +600.

Club America are favorites at +400 even though they are currently in third place with 17 points. Second-placed Leon have 18 points and are rated as second favorites at +500.

America and Cruz Azul meet in a crunch fixture on Sunday with only two points separating them in the stadium shared by the two teams on Sunday, March 15, 2020 at Estadio Azteca, Mexico City 10:15 pm EST.

The initial target for a Cruz Azul team being regarded as a surprise package is a top-eight place and qualification for the “Liguilla” playoffs and their form suggests they will make it.

Three Big Tests Coming

Three fixtures from the next four for Cruz Azul are against top four teams – Club America, Pumas UNAM and Leon. Additionally, Cruz Azul will be participating in CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals against LAFC which begin this Thursday.

This will test the true strength of their championship challenge but currently, they look good value at +600.

Cruz Azul have scored four times in each of their last two Liga MX fixtures.

Before last weekend’s defeat of Tijuana, they won away at Morelia by the same 4-2 score-line.

Sunday’s big date will also examine whether Club America can recover from a recent downturn in form to fulfill pre-season expectations.

Before the campaign began, Cruz Azul were priced only as sixth in line for the title at +1400.

The run of seven games undefeated has come after a poor opening to the competition in which Cruz Azul lost both the first two fixtures.

Before the campaign began, Cruz Azul were priced only as sixth in line for the title at +1400.

The outfit’s climb to the top has been fuelled by the goal-scoring exploits of Florida-born Uruguayan striker Jonathan Rodriguez who is the Clausura’s leading marksman with eight goals.

He was a Clausura winner with Santos Laguna in 2018.

Club America began the campaign as favorites for the championship at +400 with Monterrey and Tigres UANL rated at +500,

Leon, currently in second place, were an opening price of +800.

Shocking Fall for Monterrey

Monterrey have suffered a shocking time and are bottom of the table without a win so far. Their odds to win the title have plummeted to +6600.

After a win, a draw and a defeat in their opening three matches, Club America were not justifying their opening price.

Then came a run of four straight wins. However, they have stuttered again in recent rounds as they have been hit by suspensions to key defender Bruno Valdez and midfielder Santiago Caceres.

They have also lost forward Nicolas Castillo and midfielder Nicolas Benedetti to injury for the rest of the season.

Leon will also face a test of their strength this weekend in a clash with fellow title hopefuls Pumas UNAM.

Last weekend’s 3-3 draw away against Pumas UNAM – currently in fourth place – followed a 3-0 home defeat by mid-table Necaxa.

It will be an opportunity for Leon to build on their 4-1 thrashing of Juarez in their last game.

Like America, Leon’s form has been patchy in recent weeks; raising hopes for Cruz Azul if they can maintain their current consistency.

Before the defeat of Juarez, Leon lost 2-0 at Guadalajara.

They had previously beaten Necaxa 2-0 but prior to that had fallen 3-1 against Atletico San Luiz.

Close Battle for Playoffs

The battle for seedings in the playoffs currently looks tight with only five points separating the leaders Cruz Azul and Pachuca, who are in eighth place with 14 points.

Currently, it looks like a close battle to climb into top eight, too.

In ninth place, Santos Laguna trail Pachuca only by virtue of one in the goal difference tally.

However, Pachuca is on a current run of three wins and a draw from their last four fixtures and looks good value for a top eight finish at +125.

Atletico San Luis are 10th with 13 points.

Pick: Pachuca Top Eight Finish +125
