Both teams needed extra time to advance past their semifinal foes. England played Italy to a 1-1 90-minute draw before Chloe Kelly scored on a rebound from her own missed penalty in the dying minutes of extra time to give England a 2-1 win.
Spain was held to a 0-0 scoreless draw by Germany, despite putting seven shots on target and generating 1.58 xGF in the first 90 minutes. In extra time, reigning Ballon d’Or-winner Aitana Bonmati scored from a nearly impossible angle to give Spain a 1-0 win a.e.t.
England and Spain have played six times since 2020, all competitive fixtures, and Spain holds a 3-2-1 edge. England’s only regulation win came at home in Nations League play in February 2025 (1-0). Spain answered back with a home win in June (2-1), also during Nations League action. England also beat Spain in extra time in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Euro (2-1).
The last time the teams met in neutral territory, Spain toko a much-deserved 1-0 in the final of the 2023 World Cup in Sydney, Australia. Defender Olga Carmona scored the only goal of the game in the 29th minute, but the 1-0 final flattered the English, who also conceded a penalty in the second half that keeper Mary Earps managed to save. Spain finished the WC final with 14 shots (five on target), 57% of possession, and 2.04 xGF. England managed just three shots on target and a meager 0.53 xGF over the 90 minutes.
