  • Next Wednesday, Red Bull Salzburg hosts Liverpool at the Red Bull Arena Salzburg in the last matchday of the Champions League.
  • Liverpool are top of the group, but could fall out of the top two on goal differential if Salzburg are able to achieve a win at home.
  • Currently, Liverpool are the favorite with a moneyline of -116.

Group E of the Champions League has been one of the most interesting pods of teams during the new campaign, with Liverpool, Napoli and Salzburg all competing for the top spot. It will come down to the final matchday to decide who will make it to the knockout stages. Will it be defending European champions, Liverpool? Or will it be newcomers Salzburg led by 19-year-old Erling Haaland?

While the easy guess may be to predict Liverpool winning the game easily, Jesse Marsch’s team proved that thesis to be critically incorrect in the reverse fixture. At Anfield, down 3-0 in the Champions League is such a daunting task, but the Austrian team were able to claw their way back with goals from Hwang Hee-chan, Takumi Minamino, and golden-boy Haaland.

Unfortunately, the fortress of Anfield stood strong and Mo Salah was able to find the winner with 20 minutes to go.

Fabinho Absence to Hurt Liverpool

More recently, the Reds from Merseyside are on flying form, winning five out of the last six heading into Wednesday’s mid-week match against Everton, excluding a draw at home to Napoli. In those matches, they have beaten the likes of Manchester City and Crystal Palace and have outscored their opponents 12-6. While they have not been flooding in the goals, Jurgen Klopp’s team has been grinding out victories and playing like champions to be frank.

However, a recent injury to their number six, Fabinho, that will keep him out for eight weeks will hinder the squad. Expect James Milner or Jordan Henderson to play this role next Wednesday night with Gini Wijnaldum and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain advancing in the midfield pack.

For the Austrians, they have also been impressive with three wins and three draws out of six matches. They have bettered Liverpool and outscored their opponents 13-5. In the Austrian Bundesliga, they have an impressive home record of 14-2, which begs the question; can Liverpool finally perform on an away day in the Champions League?

Best Bet

For this match, the best bet is Liverpool to win the game outright and is a much more safe bet than the “Over” or “Under”. Making that bet in this game would be very risky because Liverpool have really not been scoring a ton of goals as of late and it very well could be a slow-churning game. However, it could be the total opposite and be a thrilling Champions League night that we know both these teams are capable of.

Nevertheless, Liverpool will get the job done on Wednesday night and progress in the Champions League as the winner of the group. Historically, the English team always get the job done in Europe and nobody should expect anything less from them here. Jurgen Klopp has dubbed his squad as “mentality monsters”, and they have lived up to that name so far this season.
