Bittersweet Win for Finland in Copenhagen

Finland’s win in Copenhagen over the hosts Denmark was an outstanding achievement but was, of course, overshadowed by the horrific scenes that followed the collapse on the pitch of Denmark’s Christian Eriksen after suffering a cardiac arrest. The news since has been, thankfully positive but it was a very surreal atmosphere in which the Fins later won the game 1-0.

Nevertheless, the goal from Joel Pohjanpalo sealed a historic win for Finland and has set them up nicely for a realistic tilt at the knockout stages of this tournament – especially if they can avoid defeat here against Russia, whose Euros started with a very disappointing 3-0 loss to Belgium.

Finland – appearing at their first-ever major tournament – won the game courtesy of Pohjanpalo’s header but was also thankful to goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky who saved a weak Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg penalty, which would have drawn the Danes level. But no blame should be attached to Hojbjerg or the Danish players, who played the remaining 49 minutes of that game in near-impossible conditions.

But, still, Finland’s win saw them end a disappointing six-game winless run across all competitions leading up this tournament, which included two friendly defeats in the week before the game. What they will need to do against Russia, is give a better supply to leading scorer Teemu Pukki to give themselves a chance.

Tough Start for Russia

Russia came into these Euros off the back of some decent form and one of the best qualifying records – eight wins from their ten group games – but suffered at the hands of a confident and efficient Belgium, whose first and third goals were scored by Eriksen’s Inter Milan teammate, Romelu Lukaku. Stanislav Cherchesov’s side was simply blown away by the Belgians in a game that was effectively over a soon as Lukaku had notched his 10th-minute opener.

By the time Thomas Meunier tapped home a second goal on 34 minutes, the Russians were already in damage limitation mode, such was the dominance of Belgium, who was able to rest Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard from the starting XI. Given that Lukaku’s second goal did not arrive until the 88th-minute, in that respect it was job done for Russia, especially with games against Finland and Denmark to come.

While Cherchesov’s team had something of a free pass in their opener, they have now reached must-not-lose territory and must overcome a very modest record in the finals stages of this tournament if they are to progress. Their defeat by the Red Devils means that they are now winless in six European Championship games, going back to a 4-1 win over the Czech Republic in the 2012 competition in Poland and Ukraine. In fact, they have lost their last three games at the finals.

They do however have an excellent record against Finland and must use this as inspiration ahead of this one. In the four times the pair have met since Russia became an independent country, they have won every game, scoring 15 goals along the way. This should give them a considerable psychological advantage.

Finland vs Russia Best Bets

Finland handled a very difficult occasion extremely professionally in Copenhagen but it was an emotionally grueling 90 minutes, which will have drained them.  To ask them to go again just a few days later is a big ask in the circumstances, even though they will be buoyed by the win.

As a result, Finland boss Markku Kanerva may bring in some fresh faces but it is a squad that, while containing some talented individuals, does lack depth. This will be to Russia’s advantage, as will the fact they desperately need a win in front of their home crowd. They simply have to go for it and the crowd will demand it. So, it is for that reason I still see value in the Russia win, even though it is still odds-on.
