The Euro 2020 knockout stages proceed on Monday, with an intriguing encounter between world champions France and Switzerland in Bucharest.
The French finished atop the Group of Death ahead of both Germany and Portugal, but they won just once while drawing twice. The Swiss meanwhile ended up outside of the top two in Group A with a 1-1-1 record but ultimately progressed to the knockout stages as one of the third-place teams in the competition thanks to goal difference.
The last meeting between France and Switzerland saw them play to a scoreless draw in Group A at Euro 2016.

Can The Favorites Come Through?
Despite a rather dismal group stage showing, Didier Deschamps’s side is still the favorite to lift this summer’s trophy at Wembley. The road will not be easy though. France will play either Croatia or Spain next and then would come up against the likes of Belgium, Portugal, or Italy on their side of the bracket before a potential final.
In fairness, Les Bleus was in a very, very tough pod. Their lone victory over the Germans was by no means convincing, however, with a Mats Hummels own goal handing the French a key three points. A gritty Hungary side then held the World Cup holders to a point in a 1-1 draw on matchday two, with Antoine Greizmann bagging the lone goal for France.
While their final clash of the group phase ended in a 2-2 result with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, Deschamps’ men did showcase more of the attacking prowess they’re known for. Karim Benzema scored a brace in a rematch of the Euro 2016 final, giving the Real Madrid hitman his first two goals of the competition.

Although France hasn’t necessarily shown up yet in the final third after netting just four times in three matches, the quality throughout the squad is capable of a moment of brilliance.
Kylian Mbappe has yet to find the back of the net which is a huge rarity for one of the best young strikers in world football and he’ll surely be looking to wreak havoc against Switzerland in the last 16. The French midfield, anchored by Premier League standouts Paul Pogba and N’golo Kante, has been extremely solid, while the backline has conceded just three goals.
This is the time for France to shine.
Daunting Task for Switzerland
After failing to qualify in 2012, Switzerland has now advanced to the knockout stages of the European Championships in back-to-back tournaments. However, Vladimir Petkovic’s side will be put to the ultimate test against France.
The group stages saw the Swiss put together a mixed bag of results. After drawing Wales on matchday one, the impressive Italians throttled them 3-0 just days later. However, Switzerland responded in fine fashion in their final group fixture as they ran riot on Turkey with a 3-1 victory to solidify themselves a spot in the Round of 16.
Liverpool attacker Xherdan Shaqiri led his side in the final third, bagging a double against the Turkish while also tallying an assist versus Wales. The 29-year-old is currently the most capped player in the Swiss squad, having made 94 appearances for his country while bagging 25 goals.

Les Bleus is arguably one of the toughest opponents Switzerland could’ve played in the last 16 and sure enough, they’ve never beat France in a competitive fixture. If Petkovic’s squad could somehow pull off the upset, it would be the first time progressing to the quarterfinals of a major tournament since the 1954 World Cup. Talk about a long time coming.

France vs Switzerland Prediction
It’s extremely hard to bet against France. Even though Les Bleus didn’t look great in the group stages, the talent within their squad is impossible to look past. As for the Swiss, this is currently one of their greatest generations of football. But, unfortunately, the French are just far too solid in all areas to be beaten in such an important match.
The moneyline doesn’t offer a whole lot of value here. Therefore, I’m taking the hosts to secure a comfortable two-goal victory as they book their ticket in the quarterfinals, with both teams scoring.
Pick: France to Win by 2 (+350), Both Teams to Score (+123)
