- This Friday, at 2:30 PM EST, Freiburg hosts Bayer Leverkusen at the Schwarzwald-Stadion, once again in a match with no fans in attendance
- The match has serious stipulations for European qualification as Freiburg and Leverkusen sit in eighth and fifth place respectively
- Currently, Bayer Leverkusen is the favorite with moneyline odds of -145
The first game of Bundesliga Matchday 29 is Bayer Leverkusen away at Freiburg in a match that could really put some pressure on other teams towards the top of the table. The teams are 15 points away from each other currently, but with a win and a Hoffenheim loss, Freiburg could find themselves just one spot away from Europa League play next season.
On the contrary, Bayer Leverkusen are only outside Champions League qualification due to goal difference and could potentially hop up into third place with a victory on Friday night. Both teams have played three matches since the Bundesliga resumed play, but Leverkusen has had the much more positive results.

Kai Havertz Looks to Break Inconsistency for Leverkusen
Coming off a long break due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Leverkusen started off flying, marking wins against Werder Bremen and Borussia Monchengladbach with a combined score of 7-2. However, just this past Tuesday they were humbled by Wolfsburg 4-1, proving this squad might not have what it takes to finish this year’s Champions League race.
Despite this, the club has been led by 20-year-old sensation Kai Havertz who has tallied ten goals and five assists during this year’s campaign. After letting up four goals in the 3-4-3 formation, it will be interesting to see if they revert to a back four considering Freiburg just put three past Frankfurt. Leverkusen will still be without striker Kevin Volland, but Havertz will be supported by Bellarabi and Diaby upfront on the attack.

Freiburg Looking to Get First Win Since Restart
While also playing three Bundesliga games since the restart, Freiburg has failed to win a game, gaining only two points from draws against Leipzig and Frankfurt. They played their last game in a traditional 4-4-2, which could change if they decide to give their main man up top, Nils Petersen, the start. Petersen has nine goals on the season and made himself a major threat coming off the bench on Tuesday.

The last time these two clubs played it finished in a 1-1 draw. With massive implications on the line, expect this one to be a cracker of a game and for both squads to really get after it offensively. Only six matches remain in the Bundesliga season, so it is time for both of these teams to make their mark going forward.
Freiburg vs Bayer Leverkusen Statistics
8th (38 Points) | Standing in Bundesliga | 5th (53 Points) |
1.4 | Goals per game | 1.9 |
13.1 | Shots per game | 15.1 |
48.8% | Average Possession % | 59.8% |
Best Bet
The best bet for this match is to go with placing money on over three goals in the match at (-109). These odds are favorable compared to the rest of them on the table, which heavily favor Leverkusen. I am not so sure that Leverkusen can cover the spread given the fight Freiburg has shown recently. However, it is probably easy to guess that this one could be a goal-fest.
Since resuming, these two teams have played in six games averaging 3.83 combined goals per contest. This proves the ‘Over’ is the safest and most worthwhile bet on the table for Friday’s Bundesliga showdown.
My Pick: Over 3 goals (-109)
