Unbeaten Run Ended by the USA

It has been a tough start to World Cup qualifying for Honduras who has yet to register a win. Despite making solid starts in each of their three games so far, Los Catrachos have failed to see the job through and have two draws and a defeat to their name. An opening day 1-1 draw away in Canada was a solid start but they failed to build on this on Matchday 2 when they disappointingly drew 0-0 in El Salvador.

Worse was to follow on Matchday 3 when, despite taking an early lead in their home tie with USA, they proceeded to concede four times; a result that, crucially, saw them end the day in sixth place in the league table and with a -3 goal difference. This defeat was doubly disappointing for Fabián Coito’s men because it ended a proud unbeaten run at home that stretched back to 2016.

Coito’s Men Enjoy Good Home Form

This is a vastly experienced Honduras team, which prioritizes maturity over youth, but since beating Grenada 4-0 in their first game at this summer’s Gold Cup they have struggled for form. Against the continent’s more youthful and energetic nations they have found the going tough recently and have conceded 12 goals in their last six games across all competitions.

Coito now has to strike a balance between experience and youth in his team but having players in his squad who qualified for the 2010 and 2014 World Cups could prove invaluable, especially in the latter stages of qualifying. They will look to use some good home form here to get three points on the board.

Goals Hard to Come By for Costa Rica

The only team in the CONCACAF region that comes anywhere near Honduras in terms of numbers of caps is Costa Rica who actually has three players in their current squad who each have over 100 international appearances to their name. They certainly don’t lack experience, but they have been on an ordinary run of form of late and have only scored a single goal in their last five games, which came in their 1-1 draw with Jamaica on Matchday 3. Prior to that, their last goal came back in July, also against the Reggae Boyz, in a 1-0 win in their third group game in this summer’s Gold Cup.

Costa Rica’s newly appointed coach, Luis Fernando Suarez, has had a tricky start to the job with his obvious challenge being to find a goalscorer in his squad who can offer a regular supply of goals; a problem that ended said Gold Cup campaign when they were beaten 2-0 by Canada in the quarterfinals. Goals have been particularly hard to come by away from home.

It is not only goals that are an issue though; even shots on target have been hard to come by for the Costa Ricans, with just a single shot on target in each of their opening two games of qualifying – the first in a 0-0 draw with Panama and then in a 1-0 home defeat by Mexico. They do though have a decent record in front of goal against Honduras, scoring at least once against them in each of their last five games, dating back to 2017.

Honduras vs Costa Rica Best Bets

This is a meeting of two struggling teams, so it feels as if something has to give. The winner will take themselves into the top half of the qualifying group; the losers will be left with a very tough job to qualify. The Hondurans will look to home advantage to give them the edge while Costa Rica will look to a good recent record in front of goal against Honduras as inspiration.

For me, the Costa Ricans’ troubles in front of goal could ultimately prove costly and with the home side still in plus-money, there looks to be value in the straight win for Honduras.

Pick: Honduras to win (+165)
