  • After 19 matches played, Wycombe is at the top of the table in League One with 40 points; however, Ipswich is only four points behind with a game in hand
  • It is a very narrow title race as the top ten teams in the league are only separated by 12 points
  • Currently, second place Ipswich are the favorites to win the League One title with a moneyline of +225

League One is one of the most competitive leagues in all of England, and given its tight, early title race, it is living up to its name once more. After the next round of matches, Ipswich could bring themselves one point closer to the likes of Wycombe at the top of the table. Not far behind is Peterborough who have set the league on storm this season with their high-firing offense who have netted a blistering 42 goals in only 19 games.

League One Title Odds

Team Odds
Ipswich +225
Wycombe +500
Oxford United +600
Peterborough United +800
Fleetwood Town +900
Portsmouth +1200
Rotherham +1200
Sunderland +1600
Blackpool +2500
Doncaster Rovers +2800

Odds taken on Dec. 12

The rest of the pack near the top ten is all within a couple of points of each other, making each game vital for every single team. Even Fleetwood could go third as they have two games in hand with 29 points, currently sitting in ninth place. That is what makes this title race all the more interesting. Due to the game schedule, not all matches in a week are played on the same weekend, which really adds a sense of pressure for teams who need to keep up with the pace.

Defense is the Benchmark of the Title Race

While all the teams in the top ten are respectively inches away from one another, there is one thing separating the best, from the fakers. This factor is defense. We have all seen how Virgil van Dijk and Alisson have impacted the Liverpool side, previously known for their willingness to plow forward but also concede too many goals. This is the case with Peterborough. While Ivan Toney and Mohamed Eisa have been brilliant, both on 13 goals, it does not matter because the team is conceding more than once a match.

Comparatively to the top two, Ipswich and Wycombe, they have only let in 13 and 14 goals respectively. While they have both also scored less, their style of play is much more disciplined and fit for a long, grinding season with hopefully a trophy at the end of it. My prediction is that the teams three through ten will have a massive fight to see who gets in the promotion spots. However, it is down to Ipswich and Wycombe to see who will win it all.

Best Best

Now some of you might be asking, which team has the better odds to win? Currently, Wycombe are on flying form, winning four of their last five. Ipswich on the other hand, has struggled recently with three consecutive draws. Wycombe take on Burton and Oxford United in their next two matches. They should at least see four points from the two games.

Ipswich has Bristol Rovers and Portsmouth which may be more of a challenge and could give them reason to plunder in their title race. Also, Wycombe’s scoring is much more spread out as James Norwood has done most of the scoring for Ipswich, making one think if he were to go down, they would be in a lot of trouble. Because of these reasons, and the higher bet value, the best bet for the League One title is Wycombe at +500.

My Pick: Wycombe (+500)
