In a year unlike any other, it’s not surprising that La Liga’s traditional power structure has been completely blown up.

Real Sociedad and its plethora of homegrown talent sits alone in first place, Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid looks unstoppable en route to a 0.25 GAA and Barcelona sits 13th — yes, mid-table — and has won just once in its last five league outings.

Fresh off a disappointing 0-0 Champions League draw in Russia mid-week, Atleti will be under the microscope for their trip to Valencia and aiming to rediscover its offensive flair.

With draws in seven of its first 10 matches and no wins, Huesca will need to find a way to convert single points into victories in order to escape the relegation battle this season; beating red-hot Sevilla will be a tall order for Michel’s Azulgranas.

Barça is basically in a must-win position at this point; if Ronald Koeman’s Blaugranas are going to have even a remote chance of closing the 12-point gap with first place, they will need to earn maximum points from their next few matches — all of which (Osasuna, Cadiz, Levante) are winnable.

Pick 1: Valencia vs Atletico Madrid

With the backroom turmoil and mass exodus of talent at Valencia (3-3-4) in the month leading up to the 2020-21 season, the club’s 10th-place standing — which includes some serious scalps in first-place Sociedad (1-0) and title favorite Real Madrid (4-1) — is respectable.

Atletico Madrid (6-2-0) has been a well-oiled machine in La Liga play, conceding just once in its last five matches — all wins — and earning legitimate contender status in the process.

Simeone’s colchoneros were made to rue missed opportunities against Lokomotiv on Wednesday, failing to convert on 20 shots in a 0-0 draw.

With the ‘Over’ hitting in each of Valencia’s last five league games, the ‘Over’ is absolutely in play; Atleti has filled the net against better defensive teams than Valencia — Granada (6-1), Cadiz (4-0), etc. — already this season.

Pick: Over 2.5 (+112)

Pick 2: Huesca vs Sevilla

While it’s been a trying start to the campaign for Huesca (0-7-3), Michel’s side is certainly capable of earning results — just not wins, obviously — at home.

Sevilla (4-1-3) has been stacking results in both La Liga and the Champions League as of late, but it’s worth noting that Julen Lopetegui’s squad has struggled somewhat coming out of mid-week continental games.

The nervionenses are 1-0-2 following Champions League games this season and may be vulnerable following their long haul to Krasnodar (2-1) on Tuesday.

Huesca has drawn its last three matches at home; Sevilla has lost its last two away matches.

It’s an insignificant sample size, but nonetheless worth mentioning that Huesca won this match (2-1) back in March 2019.

Pick: Huesca +0.5 (-121)

Pick 3: FC Barcelona vs Osasuna

If Barça (3-2-3) is to have any chance of clawing back into the title picture, it will need to start picking up points and fast.

Trailing Atleti by nine — and current leader Real Sociedad by 12 — is hardly where the club expects to be, and it’s only the 4-0-0 record in Champions League play that is at least partially keeping Koeman’s head above water as manager.

Osasuna (3-2-4) is far from a juggernaut but did earn results in both meetings between the two last season: a 2-1 win at the Camp Nou in July, and a 1-1 draw in Pamplona.

Sunday’s visitors, however, have struggled away from home this season with an 0-2-2 record in their last four on the road and zero goals in that stretch.

If Osasuna couldn’t break down the likes of Alaves or Eibar, it’s unlikely Jagoba’s side will find a breakthrough against Barcelona.
