  • LAFC are the early favorites to lift the MLS Cup this season
  • 2019 finalists, Toronto FC, have the best odds of any team from the Eastern Conference
  • Who’s the best bet to win it all in 2020?

After a historic 2019 campaign, Los Angeles FC is the clear-cut favorites to win the MLS in 2020. Carlos Vela and co. set a single-season Major League Soccer record by tallying 72 points. The next closest side to them in terms of points was from the East in New York City FC, who had 64 points.

Toronto FC, who made a surprising run to the final where they eventually lost to the Seattle Sounders, finished fourth in the Eastern Conference with 50 points. However, after their impressive playoff showing, they are favorites from the East for 2020.

LAFC Looking to Win it All in 2020

LAFC had one of the best MLS seasons ever in 2019, securing 72 points across 34 matches. A huge reason for their success was Mexican International Carlos Vela, who led the league with 34 goals in just 31 appearances. Fellow attacker Diego Rossi also netted 16 times, with that two alone accounting for 50 of the team’s 85 goals. Bob Bradley’s side led the league by a longshot in goals scored and also sat atop the MLS with the least amount of goals conceded.

Although they were utterly dominant all year, LAFC couldn’t get it done in the playoffs, falling to the Seattle Sounders in the Conference Final. With basically the same squad as last season, they will be looking to win their first-ever title this year and not let history repeat itself.

Can Toronto Make a Run?

After winning the MLS Cup in 2017, Greg Vanney’s side struggled in 2018, failing to even qualify for the playoffs. Then in 2019, it looked like another dismal season, except this time they barely sneaked into postseason action. But with experience in crucial matches and a will to make another run at it, Toronto FC surprised everyone, making a Cinderella run all the way to the Final, losing to Seattle. Along the way, they knocked out Eastern Conference powerhouses Atlanta United and New York City FC on the road.

Newcomer Alejandro Pozuelo and Jozy Altidore led the way in the final third, scoring 12 and 11 goals, respectively. Not a lot has changed in their squad for 2020, so there’s really nothing stopping them from at the very least, making the playoffs once again. They’ll be looking to get a higher seed heading into the postseason though so they can feed off the energy of their home crowd.

LAFC is the Best Bet Right Now

Just based on their form last year and basically their whole starting eleven returning in 2020, LAFC is the best bet to win the MLS Cup this season. They have two world-class talents upfront in Carlos Vela and Diego Rossi, and a solid backline who have experience.

Other teams that could make a push this season are crosstown rivals LA Galaxy, who just signed former West Ham player Chicarito, New York City FC who are always strong, Toronto FC, defending champions Seattle, and Atlanta United, who have one of the most clinical finishers in the league in Josef Martinez.

We’ll have to see how the season plays out, but as of right now, Bob Bradley’s squad are the best bet to lift the Cup in 2020.

Pick: LAFC +300
