The Mourinho Factor

It will be a crackling atmosphere in the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday after the two derbies of 2020-21 were played out in the sterile atmosphere of an empty stadium. Last season ended with one win apiece, with Lazio winning 3-0 in January and Roma beating their neighbors 2-0 in the return fixture in May.

For Roma, Jose Mourinho’s arrival as head coach has had a positive effect on a team that finished a disappointing seventh last term, with just a single defeat in all competitions so far alongside seven wins. Their latest victory came in midweek when, in true Mourinho fashion, they beat Udinese 1-0 in a tight game that was settled by a goal from summer-signing Tammy Abraham. It was soured only slightly by a late red card for Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini, who now misses the Rome derby.

Toughest Test So Far for Roma

The Udinese win followed directly on from Roma’s first defeat of the season last weekend when they let slip an early lead in Verona and ended up losing 3-2, but it was merely a blip on what has an outstanding opening month. Along the way, Roma has put together a brilliant home record – seven Serie A wins on the spin (their best run since 2017) – and has scored a goal in each of their last nine games; not always a given for a Mourinho team.

The fixture list has, however, been kind to Roma and Mourinho, and Sunday’s contest represents arguably their toughest test of the season so far By Sunday evening we will all have a better idea of whether Mourinho’s team has what it takes to challenge Napoli, the Milan teams and Juve for the Scudetto.

Tough Start for Sarri

It has been a tricky start for Lazio, who began this Serie A campaign as one of the favorites, but they have still managed to maintain their good home form, which has seen them go 15 home games without defeat – a proud run they will not want to see ended at the hands of their fiercest rivals.

Like Lazio, they too changed managers in the summer, with the experienced Maurizio Sarri replacing Simone Inzaghi. A change in ethos has taken some time to bed in and Sarri has called for patience from the Lazio fans as his players take on board new messages and a new way of playing. A win over Roma would be an ideal way to get the fans onside.

Unbeaten in Four ‘Home’ Derbies for Lazio

Two draws for Lazio in the last week – the latest on Thursday against a Torino side looking for their third win on the spin – suggests that Sarri is at least making the Romans harder to beat, although it did need an injury-time penalty from  Ciro Immobile to earn them the point. It also meant that they have now gone four games without a win; a run that includes a Europa League defeat at the hands of Galatasaray.

Sunday’s game will be the 155th Rome derby, with Lazio recording 39 wins compared to Roma’s 55, but worth noting is that Lazio has not been beaten in the last four Serie A derbies in which they have been the ‘home’ side.

Lazio vs Roma Prediction

While these two are separated by just four points in the table, the mood in the Roma camp is far more buoyant. While both teams are under new management, Roma has settled by far the quicker of the two and comes into this with more confidence.

Sarri, however, is a smart operator and will use the passion and fervor of a Rome derby to inspire his players. These two teams are barely separated by the odds – a fair reflection on what is sure to be a very close game – but, for me, Lazio’s good home form on these big occasions could be a factor.  So too the fact that a win would see them close the gap to Roma to just a point.

Pick: Lazio to win (+170) / Immobile as first goalscorer (+350)
