Injury-Time Drama

Leon’s equalizer last weekend in their 1-1 home draw with Santos Laguna came in the most dramatic of circumstances when they were awarded a penalty in the 15th (!) minute of injury time. Angel Mena stayed composed enough to covert the spot-kick and earn his team a point from what had been a really tough evening.

Club America’s round 5 game was equally dramatic. They headed into injury-time against Tijuana with the game goalless, but in the most dramatic circumstances possible, Sebastian Cordova and Renato Ibarra both scored in added time to earn their side three valuable points. The result was Club opened up a three-point gap at the top of the table with an impressive 16 points from their six games.

Club America Unbeaten in 11

As you would expect of the top two, these are the form teams in the league right now, with the visitors currently unbeaten in 11 – a run made up of ten wins and a draw. Club Leon, meanwhile, has not lost since opening day when they fell to a surprise 4-0 defeat to Pachuca, but their form since has been excellent and their draw last Sunday ended a five-game winning run.

In terms of head-to-heads, these two have identical records over their last 24 meetings – 10 wins each and four draws – so there is very little to chose between them. Two quality teams who are very well matched. In their most recent meeting, back in March in the Estadio Azteca, Club America secured another dramatic 2-1 win thanks to an injury-time winner from Federico Vinas.

No Wins For Club America in Leon in Six

In terms of team news ahead of tonight, Leon striker Luis Arturo Montes is manager Ariel Holan’s only major concern with a thigh injury but otherwise, he has a fit and healthy squad from which to pick his starting XI. For Club America, manager Santiago Solari, there are a few more selection problems, with Leonardo Suarez and Santiago Naveda suffering from ankle and foot problems respectively.  Both will miss out tonight.

While these two, as mentioned above, have a very even record in head-to-heads, it is well worth noting is that Club América has not won in Leon in their last six visits but, to counter that, are also currently on a run of four away games without defeat. This will be a game that will turn on a moment of brilliance or, perhaps, a mistake, so well matched are these two.

Leon vs Club America Best Bets

Leon starts as favorite, albeit in plus money – probably by virtue of having been unbeaten by Club in their last six visits to the Estadio Leon – but Club is on an outstanding run and has the momentum. Their injury-time heroics against Tijuana last weekend will have them believing that almost anything is possible and will have sent their collective confidence soaring.

The home side’s form will also leave them feeling quietly confident and their own injury-time drama of last weekend will have done nothing but boost the belief that this could be their time. Leon’s fine home form against Club will also play a part in that positive mindset but, for me, the key stat here is that Club has only conceded twice in their opening six games. With such a sound defense, I can see them edging home here by the odd goal

Pick: Club America to win (+200) / Club America to win 2-1 (+1100)
