All odds taken Feb. 13
Pick 1: Benfica vs. Braga
Bruno Lage’s Benfica (18-0-2) have faced very little adversity this season, but losing the season series to title challengers Porto via a 3-2 loss last weekend has certainly cranked up the pressure.
Benfica now lead by just four points, and face a stiff test in the form of Ruben Amorim’s Braga (10-4-6) this weekend; Braga are 8-1-0 since dropping a 2-1 decision to Benfica in cup playback on December 18 and have shot back into the top 3 conversation in the process.
It’s unlikely Benfica drops two matches in a row, but there could be value on the goal total: Braga have hit the “Over” in eight of nine matches since Amorim took over, filling the net offensively in the process, while Benfica’s last three home matches across all competitions have seen identical 3-2 scorelines.
Pick: O 2.5, 3 (-111)
Pick 2: Portimonense vs. Moreirense
Understanding the struggles of Portimonense (2-8-10) is a challenge: There is talent — Jackson Martinez, Aylton, etc. — but the team simply can’t score, and four defeats on the trot have left Ricardo Pessoa’s squad stunningly in the drop zone.
Moreirense (5-7-8) enter Saturday’s clash in Portimao with results in three of their last four (1-2-1) and hovering a safe eight points north of their hosts and the relegation places. Angolan attacker Fabio Abreu has goals in the team’s last two matches and is making the most of his first run of consistent first-division playing time at age 27.
Will Portimonense be able to drag themselves out of the drop zone? Or will Moreirense take another step towards a solid mid-table finish with a road win?
Possibly neither.
Pick: Moreirense +0.5 (-129)
Pick 3: Famalicao vs. Aves
It’s been a month to forget for both Famalicao (9-5-6) and Desportivo Aves (4-0-16) as the duo prepares to wind down Matchday 21 on Sunday evening.
After a red-hot start to the season, Famalicao have plummeted back down to earth and now sits sixth in the league.
Aves have picked up two wins in their last five, but remain stapled to the bottom of the table and four points from safety.
Joao Pedro Sousa’s Famalicao have been, er, underwhelming at home in their last few league matches (0-7 v. Guimaraes, 0-1 v. Santa Clara, 1-1 v. Maritimo), while Aves scored a 2-1 win away to Maritimo in their last road outing.
Could there be an upset on the cards?
Pick: Aves +0.5, 1 (+105)
