Traumatic Time for United

Carrick and his United team will have taken heart from their draw on Sunday at Stamford Bridge; a game they could have won after going ahead from a solo effort from summer-signing Jadon Sancho.

That they dropped two points courtesy of a late Jorginho penalty would have been crushing at the time but, on reflection, to have earned a point away at the league leaders was a huge positive, especially considering what a traumatic few weeks it has been for United.

If this is to be Carrick’s final game in charge before Rangnick takes the reins for the rest of the season, he will be desperate to sign off with a win. Two positive results in his two games have steadied the Old Trafford ship and left it in decent shape ahead of the German’s arrival, but to round it off with a win over Arsenal could see United creep into the top six.

Good Point at Stamford Bridge

The point at Stamford Bridge did little however to improve United’s league position, and it’s a sorry state of affairs for a club of their size and with such a high-quality squad to be down in tenth with just 18 points from 13 games. Defeat against Arsenal would see an eight-point gap open up between the two teams and leave Rangnick with a huge task to get United anywhere close to the top four and a place in next season’s Champions League.

One of the big problems facing Carrick and, soon, Rangnick, will be United’s Old Trafford form, where they have taken just a point from their last four league games. In that time they have scored just once. The quality of the squad is not in question but belief and team organization have been sadly lacking. Carrick has started to address this.

Arteta’s Young Guns

After a terrible start to the campaign, during which they found themselves bottom of the EPL, Mikel Arteta’s young squad have found their feet and have been playing the type of attacking, intricate soccer associated with the Gunners. Their 2-0 win over Newcastle last weekend took them up to fifth place and just a single point shy of fourth – currently held by West Ham – which brings with it Champions League soccer.

It has not been plain sailing though and Arteta’s men have had some difficult afternoons and evenings – often the price to be paid when utilizing a young squad – but the win over Newcastle, which came just a week after a 4-0 mauling by Liverpool, showed maturity and composure that has not always been evident this season.

No Euro Soccer for Arsenal

One of the criticisms of Arteta’s youngsters has been their inability to score from open play but against the Toon, goals from Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli without the aid of set-pieces was another positive sign that met with the approval of the Emirates crowd. While the absence of European soccer for Arsenal this season was not part of the wider plan, they have benefited from having more time on the training pitch.

Defensively, the Gunners have been improving – albeit the Liverpool defeat was a setback – and prior to that trip to Anfield they had kept clean sheets in three consecutive matches. Also, their recent record against United is good – unbeaten in their last six Premier League meetings – and they have not conceded a goal against them since September 2019.

Manchester United vs Arsenal Prediction

Given the current state of flux at United, this is a tricky one to call, but there is no doubting they are due a good performance and a good result at Old Trafford. While Carrick remains officially in charge, the Rangnick-factor will mean United’s XI will be playing to impress their new manager and this could tip the balance in their favor.

Arsenal’s improvement has been more evident at the Emirates than away from home and with United at even money, for me, the value is right there.

Picks: Man Utd to win (+100)
