  • Liverpool still with 100-percent record in EPL
  • Man Utd languishing in 12th as the struggle continues
  • A juicy 7-1 on offer for Liverpool Over 2.5 goals

It’s one of English soccer’s great rivalries, arguably the great rivalry, but for Manchester United and Liverpool, the playing field is not level. Not right now.

The Merseysiders are European champions and currently eight points clear at the top of the Premier League with a 100-percent record, while United are in crisis and languishing down in 12th place, 15 points adrift of their great rivals.

On Sunday, in Manchester on October 20, at 11:30 am EST, the two meet again at what was once known as the Theatre of Dreams but has recently become the auditorium of nightmares, with Old Trafford no longer being a place that oppositions teams fear.

Odds-On for Reds of Merseyside

Unsurprisingly, Liverpool start as odds-on favorites for this one, with the bookies expecting them to continue their 100-percent start to the season, but United fans will not want to watch on as their biggest and bitterest rivals continue their seemingly unstoppable march to the title. Old Trafford will be bouncing and this will be Liverpool’s biggest test of the season so far.

United, whose attack has been alarmingly toothless in recent weeks, may benefit from a fit-again Anthony Martial who will help lift some of the attacking load off the shoulders of Marcus Rashford. If both are firing on all cylinders it will offer a genuine threat to a Liverpool defence that has only conceded six goals so far in their eight games. It’s no coincidence that United’s downturn has coincided with Martial’s six-week absence because of a hamstring injury.

Worth noting is that United’s problems have been pretty much solely down to their misfiring attack and as a defensive unit they have actually performed quite well, conceding just eight goals in their eight games. Only twice – against Crystal Palace and West Ham – have they conceded more than a single goal in a game. To win this one and continue their incredible run, the Reds of Merseyside will need to be at their creative best.

Klopp’s Men Full of Self-Belief

With a raucous away following making the short trip to Manchester, Liverpool will be confident of keeping that run going – self-belief is part of the Jurgen Klopp mantra – especially knowing a win would equal two Premier League records: the most consecutive matches unbeaten (18) and the most wins to start an EPL season (9). It’s a current run that has also seen them win nine consecutive away matches in the Premier League.

So, the stats point to a tight one, a low-scoring affair that will likely be won by the odd goal, but what we have noticed is Liverpool have gone over match totals of 2.5 at an impressive 7-1 margin, with United just 2-6 in totals betting. While United’s defense is tight, an early goal for Liverpool would make this bet a definite goer. Certainly worth thinking about.

But, with Martial back and so giving Liverpool’s defense a little more to think about, this is one where the draw at +285 looks a worthy bet. United will raise their game – that much is certain.

My pick: United and Liverpool to draw (+285)
