CONCACAF World Cup qualifying is back on Thursday as eight nations continue to fight for their spot in Qatar next year. In one of the most intriguing fixtures of the lot, Mexico welcome Canada to the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The kick-off is scheduled for 9:40 PM EST.
The Mexicans are currently at the top of the group through three games, while the Canucks are tied for second with the Americans. This is a matchup that Mexico has absolutely dominated in recent memory. In fact, Canada hasn’t beat them in 11 games, a span that dates all the way back to the Gold Cup in 2000.

Mexico in Fine Form
Gerardo Martino’s men have been running riot on their opponents since the end of June. They’ve tasted defeat just once in their last 11 matches and that was in the Gold Cup Final in August when the Americans beat them. In qualifying, the Mexicans have won twice and drawn once.

In their most recent clash, El Tri played to a 1-1 stalemate with Panama, thanks to Porto standout Jesus Manuel Corona salvaging a point late in the second half with an equalizer. In their first two games of World Cup qualifiers, Mexico also defeated Jamaica and Costa Rica. Their form has been absolutely stellar for months now and it’s no surprise they’re a heavy favorite in Thursday’s encounter.
The Canadians put up a serious fight though in the Gold Cup semifinals this past summer vs Mexico, despite missing their two best attackers in Jonathan David and Alphonso Davies. Hector Herrera’s stoppage-time winner sent the Canucks home with heartbreak, but it was no easy task for the Mexicans.

Martino’s squad has an extremely well-balanced attack, with four different players in Alexis Vega, Henry Martin, Orbelin Peneda, and Corona finding the back of the net through their first three qualifying fixtures. They’ve all shown serious promise in the final third and will certainly be key figures in this clash with Canada. Mexico’s backline has also been tremendous, conceding only twice thus far.
Tall Task Ahead for Canada
The Canadians are in the final stages of World Cup qualifying for the first time since the late 90s and have made their presence felt. John Herdman’s side played to 1-1 draws with Honduras and the US before throttling El Salvador in their latest game in a 3-0 victory. Atiba Hutchinson, Jonathan David, and youngster Tajon Buchanan all netted as Canada grabbed a crucial three points.

However, they’ve had little to no success against Mexico, who are frankly known as a superior opponent. But, the Reds are a much different team than in the past, possessing tons of young and experienced talent who are poised to make a serious run at a spot in Qatar next year. Playing in Mexico City is always an absolute battle though and Canada will be tested with serious hostility at the Estadio Azteca. They’ve also never won on the road against their rivals.
Alphonso Davies is back in action for the Canucks after missing the El Salvador clash with a knee injury, which is a massive boost to the side in the final third. Although he’s more of a wing-back for Bayern, Davies is a key figure in the attack for his country and will surely be important on Thursday.

Cyle Larin will be looking to continue his terrific form as well, already bagging nine goals in CONCACAF qualifying while scoring the equalizers against the US and Honduras last month. Junior Holiett and David Wotherspoon will both be unavailable here for the Canadians but are expected to suit up on Sunday versus Jamaica.

Mexico vs Canada Prediction
As promising as Canada has looked, I don’t see them securing the full points in Mexico City in that type of atmosphere. The Mexicans are simply too strong of a side to lose on home soil against a team they’ve typically had no problems beating. However, the Canadians have secured some very impressive results across the last few months and did give Mexico a run for their money in the Gold Cup. That being said, I could honestly see a hard-fought draw here.
Pick: Draw +300
