Heartbreak for Dutch in Podgorica

Netherlands looked to be cruising to next winter’s World Cup finals on Saturday evening when they roared into a two-goal lead in Montenegro.

A Memphis Depay brace had put them in a great position and a clean sheet from thereon in would have been enough for the Dutch to book their place in Qatar, but it all went wrong during a horrendous final eight minutes.

A goal from Vukotic on 82 minutes and another from Vujnovic four minutes later brought Montenegro level and turned the game on its head, leaving the group’s two qualification spots still in the melting pot. The upshot is that now Louis van Gaal’s team must earn at least a draw against a Norway side who themselves still have a chance of automatic qualification.

A Point May Be Enough for the Dutch

As things stand, the Netherland’s two-point lead at the top of Group G has given them the smallest of cushions and they will be hoping to get the job done with a comfortable win, avoiding in the process the shredded nerves that would come with a draw. But against a Norway team that still has its own chance of glory, this could be a really tight game.

Netherlands failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia but as recently as 2010 were runners-up, losing to Italy in the final, while they also finished an impressive third in 2014. This is a nation with great World Cup pedigree although they had an underwhelming Euros in the summer where they crashed out at the round-of-16 stage.

Surprise Draw in Oslo

Norway’s own hopes of automatic qualification suffered a huge blow at the weekend when they were held to a surprise 0-0 draw in Oslo by Latvia. However, despite this disappointment, Stale Solbakken’s team can still finish either top or second in the group, and even a draw could secure them second place and spot in the playoffs if Turkey is beaten in Montenegro.

The flip side is a win for Turkey could see Norway miss out completely.

No Haaland for Norway

The Norwegians have not qualified for major final since 2000 and so are outsiders for a qualification place, but this is the best Norway squad for a generation. In addition to ErlingHaaland, a superstar of the modern game, the squad contains plenty of other talented youngsters playing in Europe’s top league, like Norwich City’s Mathias Normann.

They have, however, been hit hard in recent games due to Haaland’s absence through injury and the 21-year-old will again be missing in Rotterdam. As a result, goals have been hard to come by – 5 goals in their nine matches – although defensively they have been sound, conceding just six.

Netherlands vs Norway Prediction

The Dutch have not been beaten by Norway in any competition since 1992, winning four of their last five meetings, but significantly the pair drew 1-1 in Oslo when they met in September in the reverse fixture.

Minus the flair, skill, and pace of Haaland, the win looks like a big ask for Norway but they are an extremely well-organized and disciplined team who have lost just once in qualifying. They are capable of giving the Dutch a nervous evening and given the disappointment suffered by Van Gaal’s men at the weekend, the -235 on offer for the home win looks unappealing. Definitely worth considering though is the low-scoring draw.

Pick: Netherlands and Norway to draw (+425) / Netherlands and Norway to draw 1-1 (+950)
