The battle for second spot in Group B comes down to the wire on Champions League Matchday 6 as Portuguese giants Porto host Atletico Madrid at the Estadio do Dragao on Tuesday, December 7th. The kick-off for Porto vs Atletico Madrid is scheduled for 3:00 PM EST.
Both sides still have a realistic shot of progressing to the knockout stages. Porto can secure their spot with a victory here, while the reigning La Liga champions would need three points and for Liverpool to beat AC Milan at San Siro.
The reverse fixture on Matchday 1 ended in a scoreless draw in the Spanish capital.

Can Porto Carry Over Domestic Form?
Porto is flying high in the Portuguese top flight this term, sitting in top spot with a flawless 11-2-0 record. Their only two defeats have come in Europe to Liverpool on Matchdays 2 and most recently, 5.
Sergio Conceicao’s side rolled into Anfield on November 24th and lost 2-0 to the group B leaders, who are well above the pack with a perfect five wins. It was a rather lifeless performance from the visitors, with Thiago Alcantara and Mo Salah producing the goods for the Reds. Porto registered just one shot on goal and has frankly struggled to finish in the Champions League.

They’ve found the back of the net only three times thus far while conceding eight. Colombian standout Luis Diaz, who has already bagged 10 goals in league play, is about their only bright spot up top in the competition, scoring in back-to-back games against AC Milan. He’ll need to shine once again on Matchday 6 with his side in desperate need of the full three points.

Conceicao’s men will be coming into Tuesday’s fixture with no shortage of confidence though after running riot on sixth-place Portimonense over the weekend in a 3-0 victory on the road. In fact, Porto is on an eight-game winning run in Portugal, which is a very good sign ahead of this massive clash.
Atletico is a rather familiar opponent for the Portuguese outfit in Europe’s most prized competition, facing them a total of 10 times. However, the hosts are winless in their last three against the LaLiga titleholders.
Do or Die for Atleti
After getting knocked out in the round of 16 in last season’s edition by eventual winners Chelsea, Diego Simeone’s squad is in serious danger of bowing out in the group stages. The LaLiga giants have lost three straight matches in the Champions League to Liverpool on two occasions and, Milan.

Despite sitting rock bottom with just four points to show for, the only reason they have a fighting chance of getting into the next round is because of how poor this group has played, aside from the Reds. A victory is the only acceptable result on Tuesday in Porto though while praying for outcomes elsewhere, but that won’t be easy considering Atleti’s current form.
Simeone’s side is coming off a disappointing 2-1 defeat at the hands of Mallorca on Saturday at the Wanda Metropolitano. Matheus Cunha broke the deadlock in the 68th minute with a fine finish but the visitors stormed back with two goals in the last 11 minutes of the fixture to shock Atleti. Following the disappointing showing, Madrid has just two wins in their last six games. They’ve also failed to keep a clean sheet on the road in 2021/22.

Atletico will also be without center-back Felipe, who is serving a suspension. His usual partner at the back, Jose Gimenez is dealing with a muscular problem as well. That being said, the defense will have a different look. At the opposite end of the pitch, expect Joao Felix and Luis Suarez to feature at some point after missing the cut in domestic action.

Porto vs Atletico Madrid Prediction
While each of these sides has a rich history of being in the last 16 and beyond, I have to take Porto. Although their league form hasn’t exactly carried over to the Champions League yet, I believe they’re going to take advantage of a struggling Atletico team on Tuesday.
