Mauricio Pochettino has an opportunity to win his first silverware as PSG manager in the French Super Cup on January 13th in this PSG vs Marseille match. Marseille are the opponents for the Parisian giants, who are second in Ligue 1.

It’s a meeting of former Spurs managers as Pochettino takes on Marseille boss Andre Villas-Boas – he’s also looking for his first trophy in France, having not won any silverware since the 2015-16 Russian Cup during his stint with Zenit.

As is the case for every domestic fixture, PSG are heavy favorites for the Super Cup on Wednesday. Villas-Boas is without Luis Henrique following a positive coronavirus test and it’s unclear whether Kevin Strootman and Morgan Sanson will be available to start.

Possible Neymar Return

Neymar made a big step forward in his recovery from injury. The Brazilian star finally got back to training on Monday, perhaps signaling he could make his return on Wednesday. Unlikely to start, Mauricio Pochettino will probably name a front three of Mauro Icardi, Angel Di Maria and Kylian Mbappe. Mbappe is the joint-top scorer in Ligue 1 with 12 goals to his name already.

The 28-year-old has 10 goals and three assists in 14 club starts this term. If he gets significant game time on Wednesday, Neymar is an interesting matchup for Marseille. Villas-Boas’ team rank second in Ligue 1 when it comes to tackling dribblers. Will they be able to halt the mesmeric footwork of Neymar as he drives at the defense?

Neymar averages 5.7 completed dribbles per match in Ligue 1 this term – if he comes on late in the game against tired defenders, he will be a serious threat to create chances and win free-kicks. Any Marseille defenders on a booking when Neymar enters the game could be in trouble.

Out of Form Marseille

Impressive on their way to a second-place finish in 2019-20, Marseille have had an up and down 2020-21 so far. Their two matches in hand give them a chance to make up ground, but failure to beat struggling Dijon at the weekend saw them drop to sixth. It’s one win in five matches for Marseille, who have trended in the wrong direction since beating PSG earlier this season.

Le Classique has not been kind to Marseille in recent years. Their fiery win over PSG late last year was their first victory in the fixture since 2011 and brought an end to a five-match losing streak.

Marseille fans have some good memories of this competition, however, winning it three times previously. They met PSG in the 2010 Trophée des Champions – the match went to penalties with neither side finding the scoresheet and Marseille won the penalty shootout 5-4.

PSG vs Marseille Best Bet

Whether Neymar is available or not, the gap in quality between these two teams is vast. Marseille’s smash-and-grab win earlier in the season might have some feeling nervous about backing PSG, but that was a particularly heated match which ended in a barrage of red cards. The underdogs will be happy for a similarly scrappy affair, but PSG have the quality, and confidence after a comprehensive win at the weekend, to control this match.

Marseille are the joint-lowest scorers in Ligue 1’s top nine. They need to be on top of their game to beat PSG, and they have been far from it in recent weeks.

Taking PSG to cover is a solid bet. It’s worth looking at longer odds options here, too. PSG on the -2 handicap is great value as is PSG to win to nil at +163.

Pick: PSG -2 (+190)
