Sky Bet Championship Matchday 19 Odds & Picks: Watford vs Brentford, Derby vs Swansea & Nottm Forest vs Sheffield Wed

Matchday 19 of the EFL Championship kicks off on Tuesday with QPR vs Stoke City with the other 11 games taking place later on Tuesday and on Wednesday. Norwich currently leads the table, just three points ahead of Bournemouth.

Pick 1: Watford vs Brentford

Fourth meets sixth at Vicarage Road, with both looking for the win that will keep them in touch with leaders Norwich. With all of the top six winning at the weekend there is little room for error at the top of the Championship, so we can expect an entertaining, attacking game between two good sides.

Watford made it two wins on the spin at the weekend with a good 1-0 away win over Birmingham City, following on from their 2-0 home win over Rotherham, and have now started to add some useful performances on the road to the best home record in the division. With just three defeats from their 18 games, they have proved themselves a tough side to beat, so will offer Brentford one of their hardest assignments of the season.

On Saturday, Brentford traveled to struggling Nottingham Forest and come away with a comfortable 3-1 win; a much-needed victory after a 0-0 draw at home in midweek against Derby County. But the Bees have been in good form and are now unbeaten in 11, which includes a run of five away games undefeated.

So, a tricky game to call but something has to give. It could be one where both would be happy to emerge undefeated, and so the draw here is very much in play.

Pick: Watford and Brentford to draw (+205)

Pick 2: Derby County vs Swansea City

Derby’s goalless draw at home with Stoke at the weekend saw them pick up only their 13th point of a miserable season, which has seen them depart company with coach Phillip Cocu and temporarily replace him with Wayne Rooney.  A total of only two wins tells the story of the campaign so far, as does an underwhelming run of just six wins in their last 20 home league games, but Rooney has steadied the ship and they are actually unbeaten in their last five, albeit four been drawn.

Swansea, by contrast, are flying and their 2-0 away win against Cardiff at the weekend in the South Wales derby left them in third, just a point behind second-place Bournemouth. Not only are Steve Cooper’s team pushing the top two hard, they are doing so by playing an attractive brand of football.

Derby’s habit of picking up draws may be relevant here, but given the run the Swans are on, a narrow away win looks to be the value bet.

Pick: Swansea to win (+140)

Pick 3: Nottingham Forest vs Sheffield Wednesday

Forest are on a horrific run and have only picked up one point from a possible 18 in their last six. At the weekend, they were comfortably beaten 3-1 by Brentford and the decision to replace manager Sabri Lamouchi with the experienced Chris Hughton has, so far, done nothing to arrest their slide. In fact, it has accelerated it.

They currently sit in 21st place, just one place clear of the relegation zone, and wins for Derby and Wycombe Wanderers in midweek could see them both leapfrog Forest if Hughton’s men fail to beat Sheffield Wednesday.

Wednesday though are also on a terrible run and are currently bottom of the table – not helped by a six-point deduction – and have won just three times since the start of the campaign. Like Forest, they recently sacked a young manager in favor of a more experienced coach, but the appointment of Tony Pulis has not paid dividends.

So, another tricky one to call, and Pulis’ ability to organize a defense almost guarantees a low-scoring game, but Forest are overdue a win and home advantage may just tilt the balance in their favor.
