A spot in the EFL Cup final is on the line as Tottenham welcomes Chelsea to North London for the second leg of the semifinals on Wednesday. The kick-off is scheduled for 2:45 PM EST.

It will be an uphill battle for Spurs as they were beaten 2-0 by the Blues last week at Stamford Bridge. The winner here will face either Arsenal or Liverpool in the grand finale, which is set for February 27 at Wembley Stadium.

Tall Task for Tottenham

Tottenham certainly didn’t do themselves any favors in the reverse fixture, putting together a rather flat performance as Chelsea easily cruised to victory. Antonio Conte, who was making his first return to The Bridge since being sacked in July of 2018, even admitted there was a clear gap in quality between Spurs and the European champions.

Conte’s men showed little to no threat in the final third, managing a mere two shots on target and controlling just 36% of the ball. As if an early Kai Havertz opener wasn’t disappointing enough, a clumsy piece of defending from Japhet Tanganga resulted in his header smashing off Ben Davies and into the net for an own goal.

On a more positive note though, Tottenham did collect a much-needed win in the FA Cup third round on Sunday, burying Morecambe by a score of 3-1. The hosts did go down early by a goal but managed to net three times in the last 16 minutes after Harry Kane and Lucas Moura came on as substitutes and quickly found the back of the net after Harry Winks equalized.

In fact, Spurs have been extremely successful under their Italian manager on home soil, winning seven games and drawing just once since he took over the helm. Son Heung-min did pick up an injury in the first leg against Chelsea however and will be unavailable to feature on Wednesday.

Chelsea Looking Ruthless

The Blues are currently enjoying a 10-match unbeaten run, with their last defeat on December 4th to London rivals West Ham. While there have been several stalemates since, Thomas Tuchel’s men are playing extremely well lately, winning four of their previous six.

Their sheer dominance shined through against Spurs a week ago Wednesday and they followed that up with another fine performance against fifth-tier Chesterfield in the FA Cup on Saturday, throttling the visitors 5-1.

Chelsea was four goals to the good by the halftime whistle, with Timo Werner, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Romelu Lukaku, and Andreas Christensen all getting on the scoresheet within the first 45 minutes. Hakim Ziyech smashed home an insurance goal in the 55′ from the spot before Chesterfield managed to find the back of the net late in the second period.

Heading into the reverse tie here, the Blues will be oozing with confidence. Not only did they look like the far better side in the first leg, but Tuchel’s squad has won back-to-back games in North London, outscoring Spurs 4-0 in the process.

Tottenham vs Chelsea Prediction

To be frank, Spurs needed to bring on Kane and Moura in order to beat a third division club on Sunday. They’ve just really lacked a sense of urgency on both ends of the pitch lately and it was very evident in the first leg. Chelsea has also run riot on Tottenham in North London. Take the Blues to come out victorious and progress to the finals.
