A pair of nations looking to snap long World Cup droughts square off when Turkey faces Romania in playoff qualifying on Thursday. The Turks haven’t qualified for a World Cup since they captured the bronze medal in 2002, while it’s been 28 years since Romania last made the prestigious tournament.
Both teams bring competent offensive attacks in action, and I’m betting this elimination match exceeds the total as my favorite Turkey vs Romania pick.
How to Watch Turkey vs Romania

Turkey vs Romania Odds
As of Wednesday night, the best place to bet over 2.5 goals is at bet365. They’re offering -163 odds on that side of the total, which is a couple cents shorter than consensus.
From a moneyline perspective, Turkey is a -255 favorite, but given their defensive woes, I feel much more comfortable banking on a high-scoring affair, than on them winning this match.

Turkey will lean on elite playmaking from stars like Hakan Calhanoglu and Arda Guler to penetrate the Romanian defense in this contest. Their hyper aggressive attack produced 17 goals and 71 shots in qualification, but sloppy defense is the reason they’re still not qualified for a spot in the World Cup odds.
The Turks have conceded 12 goals to the opposition in their six qualifying matches, and have allowed at least one goal in seven of their last eight matches overall. That includes a 6-0 blowout loss to Spain, but much less talented nations like Georgia and Bulgaria also found the back of the net against them.
That spells trouble for them versus Romania, who is no offensive slouch. They’ve directed 105 shots toward the net in their last eight matches, scoring 19 times. They press at a very heavy clip, and have held a 52.5% possession rate through the qualifying stage so far.
Given the state of the Turkish defense, I also like targeting over 0.5 goals for Romania, with Valentine Mihaila the most likely to score if you’re looking to dive into the anytime goal scorer market.
Digging into the trends, the over in Turkey matches has been a very profitable wager. Five of their six qualifying games produced at least four goals, with four of those matches reaching at least a five goal total. That brings over 3.5 goals (+150) and over 4.5 goals (+350) into play for those bettors who are a little less risk adverse.
Turkey vs Romania Predictions
- Dennis Man Over 0.5 Shots on Target (+162 at bet365)
PENNSYLVANIA
Shifting gears to the player props for the contest, where I’m looking to buy Romania’s Dennis Man to record a shot. He’s one of the focal points of the Romanian attack along with Mihalia, but comes with a significantly better price in this market.
Romania’s offense is built on pressure and volume, and the shots flow through their best forwards. Man is among those, and is responsible for 17 of Romania’s 105 shots over the course of the qualifying process, with 7 of those being on target. He’s recorded 7 shots on target in his last 10 league games for PSV Eindhoven, and has attempted at least one shot in 12 of his past 13 matches for his league club.
