International football returns and this Friday features a South American classic between Uruguay and Argentina. The rivalry known as Clásico del Río de la Plata is a staple of the international game and Friday will mark the 200th official meeting between the two nations. Furthermore, the match’s significance is raised as this game marks CONMEBOL’s 13th round of World Cup Qualifiers.
Uruguay play host for the fixture, which will be played at the Estadio Campeón del Siglo in Montevideo. This will serve as a massive advantage for the Sky Blues, as their only loss in six home World Cup Qualifiers came at the hands of Brazil.

Odds as of Nov 10th at DraftKings
Currently, Argentina sits in second place in World Cup Qualifying, with a comfortable eight-point lead on third-place Ecuador. Argentina also have a game in hand due to their COVID-19 fiasco in Brazil a couple of months ago.
Conversely, Uruguay remains tensely in fifth place. This position represents advancement to the inter-confederation playoffs, a tournament no country wants to go through. Despite this, they sit level with Colombia on points and are only one point shy of Ecuador’s tally of 17 points. A win against Argentina would provide them much-needed relief in the middle of the pack.
Expect Uruguay to Struggle Against Another Top Side
Additionally, one trend about this Uruguay side is that they struggle against the other top nations in CONMEBOL. Specifically, they have struggled in this edition of World Cup Qualifying. Against the current top four teams in CONMEBOL, they have only won seven points from an available twenty-one, in seven matches.
Moreover, some of the matches recently have been outright drubbings at the hands of some of their biggest rivals. In fact, one of those matches was between Uruguay and Argentina just over a month ago. Argentina won the match easily by a score of 3-0, thanks to goals from Lionel Messi, Rodrigo de Paul and Lautaro Martinez.

However, it was not just the scoreline that Argentina dominated. La Albiceleste also maintained 62% possession in the match and put 23 shots up on Galatasaray goalkeeper, Fernando Muslera.
When you begin to look at Uruguay’s last match, which was a 4-1 defeat against Brazil, things start to get even bleaker. Their last win was all the way back in early September, which should be salivating for Argentina and their fearless attack.
Lionel Messi’s Status is Currently Questionable
While Messi has been sitting out in games for Paris Saint-Germain lately, he has trained with Argentina ahead of Friday’s meeting with Uruguay. Recently, the Barcelona legend has been dealing with some knee and hamstring niggles that kept him out in games against RB Leipzig and Bordeaux.
Uruguay vs Argentina South American Qualifier Statistics
1.17 | Goals per game | 1.73 |
1.42 | Goals conceded per game | 0.55 |
12.17 | Fouls per game | 12.08 |
47.17% | Possession % | 60.45% |
8.42 | Shots per game | 15.27 |
It is safe to say that his presence makes all the difference in this Argentina side. With six goals in Argentina’s 12 matches, he is a threat to score at every moment, despite his slow start in Ligue 1.

If Messi does miss this match, the Argentina attack will still feature the likes of Paulo Dybala, Angel Di Maria, Martinez and de Paul. Edinson Cavani will miss out for Uruguay on the other side of the pitch, which makes these sides even more mismatched.
The H2H Results
Over the 199 previous meetings between these sides, Argentina has won 91, while managing to draw an additional 49. This will be their 14th meeting in World Cup Qualifying, but again, this is a competition dominated by the Argentineans. Uruguay has only managed to win two of those 13 games, being outscored 19-9 in the process.

To conclude, the last time Uruguay actually beat Argentina was all the way back in 2013. However, in the two Uruguay home games since then, Argentina has failed to win, which does provide some hope for Uruguay and their fans.
Uruguay vs Argentina Best Bet
Overall, the best bet for this match is the Argentina moneyline with odds of +140. These odds are tremendously good, almost too good to be true. This game has mismatch written all over it, and considering that Lionel Messi might have a part to play is all you need to know.
Pick: Argentina moneyline (+140)
