Vicarage Road will be the scene on Sunday, June 28, as Watford welcome Southampton (kick-off 11:30pm ET). It’s an important match for both teams in regards to their current spots in the Premier League table. The Hornets are just one point above the relegation zone, meanwhile, the Saints are trying to inch closer to the middle of the table as they currently sit in 14th.

Watford suffered a 1-0 defeat by the hands of Burnley on Thursday, while Southampton was beaten by Arsenal, 2-0. In the lone meeting between these squads back in November, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side came out with three points in a 2-1 victory over the Hornets at St.Mary’s.

Hornets Seeking Much-Needed Result

Despite failing to grab three points through their first two matches back since the pandemic, Watford has been playing decent football. They’ve tied a quality Leicester City side and were just edged out by a goal against Burnley on Thursday. In both games, Nigel Pearson’s men had 55% of the possession. Scoring continues to be an issue for the Hornets though, bagging just 28 goals in 31 fixtures this term while conceding 46. One of their lone bright spots this season was handing Liverpool their only loss, burying the Reds 3-0 just before the hiatus.

This match against Southampton will prove to be extremely important in regards to Watford’s Premier League fate. With Villa, Bournemouth, and West Ham just one point behind the Hornets, any slip up could leave them sitting in a relegation spot. Remaining on their schedule are several tough clashes against the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, and Man City. Therefore, Watford will need to bring their best every single matchday if they want to stay in England’s top-flight.

Can Southampton Climb Into Top 10?

After a rough spell at the beginning of the season where they were one of the favorites to be relegated, Southampton quickly smartened up and started putting up a string of positive results. However, they’ve been in dismal form in their last 10 matches, winning just three times in that span. But, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad have numerous matches left this term where they can definitely take away points.

Danny Ings continues to be a vital part of Southampton’s success this term, bagging a career-best 16 goals. Since the hiatus, the former Liverpool man has scored once and also tallied an assist. The Saints do have numerous players who can contribute in the final third, but their backline has looked vulnerable at times, conceding 54 goals this season. Although Watford has lacked productivity in front of goal, Jannik Vestergaard and Jan Bednarek must stay sharp at the back for Southampton if they want three points on Sunday with Hornets’ frontman Troy Deeney always posing a threat.

History is on Southampton’s side though, going undefeated in 12 of their last 13 matches against Watford.

Best Bet

Recent clashes between Watford and Southampton at Vicarage Road have ended in draws, but I believe the Saints will pull out three points on Sunday. Ings will once again do his part on the attack, while Southampton’s backline will manage to keep Watford at bay in the final third, resulting in a one-goal win for the visitors.
