Wednesday, July 1st sees four matches taking place in the Premier League. West Ham and Chelsea, two clubs with contrasting concerns, are the headline fixture of the evening, with the two meeting at London Stadium.

The Hammers are in the midst of a relegation battle that is getting tenser by the week. Only goal difference is keeping West Ham out of the bottom three as it stands. Chelsea have made significant strides towards qualifying for the Champions League since the Premier League resumed.

There’s pressure on both clubs ahead of this eerie London derby. Matchday 32 could prove to be pivotal at both ends of the table.

Abysmal Irons

For a team with the talent West Ham have, this has been a woeful season. Only Newcastle have accumulated fewer expected points by Understat’s model. They haven’t scored in their last three matches, losing both since the season’s restart. This is a squad with big names and plenty of investment, but they have been playing like a relegation side for most of the campaign.

There’s a bit of positive news for David Moyes ahead of Wednesday’s derby. Sebastien Haller, West Ham’s top scorer with seven goals, should be available, although he may have to settle for coming off the bench. After they failed to create anything of note against Spurs or Wolves, the return of a natural center forward will be welcome – Michail Antonio has often looked ineffective as the lone frontman.

West Ham’s record in the Premier League since Christmas makes for ugly reading: 14 played, two wins, two draws, 10 defeats.

The names on the team sheet, which should include the returning Angelo Ogbonna on Wednesday, can be misleading. This West Ham team is in trouble.

Rotating Lampard

Matches in quick succession have forced managers to rotate. Frank Lampard has shuffled his pack since the resumption, making a lot of changes for the FA Cup clash with Leicester. Tammy Abraham started ahead of Olivier Giroud, who may well get the nod for the trip to the Olympic Stadium. Mateo Kovacic came off the bench against Leicester and is in with a good chance of starting.

Christian Pulisic scored a superb individual goal against Manchester City and caused Leicester problems aplenty. He was struggling with a knock when he was taken off at the weekend, though, and is a doubt.

Chelsea have won all three of their matches since the restart and come into this match full of confidence. Their first-half performance against Leicester was poor, however, and Lampard criticized his team in his post-match interview. There’s no doubt they deserve their status as favorites here, though.

Blues to Come Out on Top

Chelsea’s defense continues to look shaky. West Ham may well end their scoreless streak on Wednesday, but the Hammers have been suspect defensively themselves and are desperately short on confidence. Chelsea, in contrast, is on a good run that extends to before the season’s suspension.

West Ham have a good record in this fixture in recent seasons. With no crowd and the relative positions of the two teams, it’s hard to place faith in that. Bettors should be looking towards Chelsea.
